General Cycling Discussion - Should I run for club president?

In Nov. is my bike clubs annual banquet and election of officers. I have several new ideas and would like to restore some of the older traditions of the club. I feel that this job will be easier & things will get done as they probably should if I was to be club president. So should I run for the position or not? Or just settle for my current position on the board of directors and just present the new ideas as I have been trying to do so far?

Yes, you should do it!

If you have ideas you want to see implemented, just suggesting them often won't get the job done. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

First, get a good campaign slogan like - I'm a uniter, not a divider - then run!!!!! ;)

Seriously, why not run? Give it a chance, you may really like it, and also be able to help the club.

Based upon your desire and eagerness you should have a platform from which to launch your ideas.

Just remember this-The quickest way to kill a club is to forget your purpose.

Our club died because people forgot that our reason for existance was to ride bikes in groups, and not to be another service organization like the Civitians or Lion's Club, etc. Doing a community project once or twice a year is fine, but that should never be the whole reason for having a cycling club.

Wow - what an excellent point! We are just starting a cycling club, and I'm going to bring up this point @ next week's meeting.

WOW! thanks for the suggestions and support. My ideas are to have a club sponsored ridfe to celebrate the Lewis & Clark Expedition celebrations which officially begin in 2004. the old traditions I'd like to re-implement is a ride called AGONY but instead of staying in cabins or a hotel camp in tents like the club used to. It is partially because of the higher cost that this ride died last year.

As far as the club disolving that will more then likely will not happen, because we have been a established non-profit organization for the past 20 years. We have by-laws, etc that governs our club.

As far as the election of officials go there really is no campaign to speak of. During the banquet it is announced that the election is to begin. And members either speak up and say I want to hold this or that position. Or they are nominated by other members. Then it is cast to a majority vote, out loud and openly mind you, there are no ballots. The person speaking says all in favor say aye, after those that say do so then the speaker says all opposed say nay. To my knowledge there has never been a nay vote cast in the history of the club.

It is a "loose nit" type of a nomination and voting, but it is democratic meaning majority rule, and done properly meaning a open vote is called and the members openly cast their votes. And only registered members of the club are allowed to vote. If there is a guest of a member that has not paid his or her dues and signed up to be a member then they are in-eligable to vote. Like I said democracy at its finest.

I'll either announce my intentions to be president at the banquet or I'll hopefully be nominated for it. One thing I am going to do is ask the current president if he wants the job for a third term. If he does not I'll tell him I'd like it. If he does want to continue then I'll have to figure out what I'll do from there. Maybe take the position of vice president. I know I do not want the position of treasurer. That is the only one I will not accept.

Go for it! Nothing to loose and so much to gain! Sounds like you've got some good ideas.

I agree with the others. They're your ideas, and I'd say that you know better than anyone else how you want to see them implemented. What do you have to lose?
