View Full Version : So What Be the Condition Of SGRT and Encanto Park?

I'm not real familiar with the areas out there. Might have to ride there this weekend since OC sounds like it's burning rather close to the trail. I can't go without riding. No I won't ride up!

Is the SGRT/ Encanto close to any danger other than a few ashes in the air. I haven't heard of any fires in Azusa but then again I don't know all the little names of each area.

Depends onthe winds...early today..Glendale and Pasadena would have been fine...but there has been a wind shift and now its not really good...
I am concerned about riding in this, like ME I have asthma as well....
Wonder if it would be better up in ventura....sort of a cool breeze ride along the coast??

If I were you, I would wait and see, Beanz. The wind direction is supposed to be changing in the next day or two and it's hard to tell where the smoke will be. Under the best case scenario, they're saying they don't expect containment of the fires before Halloween. :o

I don't think the Santiago fire will affect riding SART at all, other than the air quality.

Cool thanx. I'm not real familiar with the area, just ride the SART all the time. SO I wasn't sure how far away the flames were. Thanx for the info. But like the others say, depends on wind direction too. If it's blowing the flames our way?

I did a group ride a few years back when some of the big fires were burning. I think it was the MtBaldy?BigBear/Stevenson fires. We rode on the SART with ashes everywhere. When we got to the beach, everyone of us had the black raccoon. Didn't affect my respiratory much. Not that I know of and I'm still alive!:o

I have to get 100 in this weekend, but honestly with the fires the way they are, if I have no other choice, I may drive up to SLO and put in 100, solo if necessary. Anywhere away from this air. But I'm praying (and not just for my ride needs) that all of this ends ASAP and the airs clear! I'm still planning for my century up GMR, etc. this Sunday, but I have no idea if that plan will be thwarted as everything is so unpredictable at present.

If it's a Sunday ride, I'll keep you company. We could head north or east to avoid the fires and smoke.

There's a lot of ash in the air today out here in S. El Monte...

Just came back from riding over to Encanto Park. This morning when I left the sky was clear in LaCrescenta over to Sierra Madre at 10:30, but you definitely see the smoke forming at higher elevation. By the time I got over to Encanto Park, the sky was pretty much covered, and you could see smoke covering everything back up hwy 39 and over to GMR. Looked like it was probably backed up all the way to Baldy.

Wind forecast indicated N to NE winds, so I thought it would blow the smoke SW, but I headed down SGRT and there was an obvious S to SW surface wind. I think it probably was causing the smoke to back up against the mountains. The smoke pretty much stayed with me providing some hi level coverage on the return trip home. Not much that I could determine at ground level as far a ash along the foothills.

I would guess that this should clear substantially by the weekend. Are you going to ride SGRT Fred??

Dude, rides under those conditions really aren't good for you.

I'm about ten minutes away from Encanto Park and the air quality sucks pretty bad here. My eyes are burning worse than they ever did at a any Dead show I've been to.

I'd love that, J. :) Thomson, Ronjon, possibly Cassave and I are going to ride somewhere...although I do NOT expect them to drive to SLO if I have to go there. My main concern is air quality. My chest feels tight and heavy and I'm sneezing. ****ing asthma...

No, Alice, although you would think they would. I read on CNN about the health hazards right now out there and the problem is that the particles of carbon dioxide and God knows what else are so tiny that they get through the mask and embed in your lungs. And if you have asthma, it's extremely dangerous as it will only make it significantly worse. :(

Ventura and the cool breeze route along the coast might be good...

I'm not sure. Mostly depends on how the fires are by the weekend. Usually if the conditions are not fair, Gina will sit out and let me kill my lungs on my own!:o

I agree..I wore one Sat, but that was for dust/dirt...not this stuff....and even that only helped a bit!

Good. I'll let Ronjon know that you will be hugging him all day on Sunday. :p

 J/K. And yes, we can look into the Cool Breeze route ard farther up. Maybe Jim will have some ideas. I don't think there is a stretch in that area he hasn't ridden...like, in one day. :D

I'd say sunday would be the best day to ride, a few days for the ash to settle. I'm hoping it clears by Saturday though.

Yikes well we're all doomed then as that air has no doubt already seeped inside our homes, too.:(

It's in all buildings. You are definitely better indoors and you should really consider NOT exercising outdoors for sure.

Considering more than thousand of building burned down & 3/4 million of people evacuvated, we should feel lucky we have a home to go back to.

I think we all do, Jet Wave, and after reading most of the comments in this regional forum, most of us have genuine concern for others who are the worst impacted by the fires. But let us not forget that it affects all of us, and the concern over the air is a real one. I do feel lucky to have an apartment to go to, no doubt about it, but I also wish the fires would go away for myriad reasons, one of them being better air quality.

Thanks, Ron. I'm going to be watching air quality very closely as the weekend nears and decide from that.

Be careful out there. From what I've been watching on CNN, the worst of the air quality may be upcoming. I'm having my sister check up very closely on my dad. Once the fire is out, the smoke may take several days for it to dissipate.

If I paid attention to the air quality reports, I'd only be able to ride 3 months of the year!:D

I work with a couple of people who live up in Oxnard (don't ask, we all commute way too far to the office) and according to them the air quality was worse up there earlier in the week, probably from the Castaic area fires, than it was in the SF valley. Ventura itself was worse than Oxnard. Air quality is getting a little better there now, but probably still about the same as the valley.
