** THANKSGIVING BALDY CHALLENGE **

Think ahead a bit -- it's the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The gravy and other remnants of the Thanksgiving gorge-fest are still coursing through your veins. You need a nice long ride.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 24TH -- THANKSGIVING BALDY CHALLENGE

This ride replaces the Pie Ride, which was called off due to the fires in San Diego County.

Route slip for the main route is posted at the bottom -- other details will be posted soon. Note that this is a very challenging ride -- about 100 miles and 10K feet of climbing. Plan on an early start -- close to first light. Also plan on a big post-ride meal. You can't let your blood-gravy levels dip too low.

Meeting Location (main route): 5701 East La Palma Avenue, Anaheim, CA 92807-2229

Meet time: 6:00am
Roll time: 6:30am (sharp!)

Who's got game?

Participants:

whitecarbondude (later start [7:30am] with "fast group")

Post Ride Meal:

5638 E La Palma Ave
Anaheim, Ca 92807

I'll meet up with you guys but I'll start closer to Baldy, probably Encanto. Otherwise, over a 100 miles at your pace, you boys (and Mel) will drop me too early. :D

Last time I did this ride from Anaheim it kicked my butt and hopped on Mandy's SAG vehicle midway up GRR. This time I'm doing this ride with Joy.

This time, perhaps you should use a geared bike! :p

I'll probably do Joy's modified route, too, just cause I'm lazy.

Sounds good.

There are enough "modified route" participants to warrant a separate start time/location for those folks. Anyone want to propose one? If you do, I'll add it to the OP.

Not sure yet ... I might be able to do this ... but if I do, I'll join Joy too from Encanto. Put me in as a maybe.

Nope. The Never Ending Pasta Bowl ended.

I might be in for this, but probably only for the Happytime version of this ride. Still sorting out the family schedule for that weekend....

Why don't we wait for your route up from Anaheim, then plan to connect somewhere along the way, or just plan to meet at the GMR/GRR junction once some expected tmes are determined.

jschen
10-24-07, 09:56 AM
Last time, some peeps joined at the base of GMR. I can understand wanting to start at Encanto so as to get a bit of warm-up. Once the details get worked out, we can give them a earliest arrival at GMR time so that they can plan on joining up at GMR for the GMR/GRR section of the ride.

I don't know if Mat is thinking about using SART to Green River, then coming up through Claremont to Mt. Baldy Rd., or going north to SGRT and up to Duarte. The other question is whether anyone that may start in Duarte wants to use hwy 39 and East Fork vs GMR. Just some possible options.

jschen
10-24-07, 10:32 AM
Baldy Challenge dumps the riders at the base of GMR. If people starting in Duarte want to go up Hwy 39, that's fine, but they might as well plan a separate ride if that's the case since the odds of them bumping into the Baldy Challenge riders is next to zero that way. If people want to start in Encanto and actually join this group, they really should roll over to the base of GMR.

I am probably in for starting at Encanto or at the base of GMR....I wont ride do 39...wave to me as you pass by!

Thanks. I'm not thinking anything beyond the route slip right now. I'll defer to jason on the details, since he's much more familiar with GMR, etc., than I am....

We'll get this figured out soon. Thanks again for your input.

Haven't seen a route slip posted, so I have no idea of what timing looks like.

10-24-07, 11:24 AM
As Jason mentioned, meeting up with the Anaheim group at the base of GMR can be timed as we can communicate by cell phone. But timing a group meeting at the GMR/GRR junction would be difficult as riders will most likely be strung out by that point.

Hmm.. just a thought, but perhaps I can ride out to meet you at the McDonald's Stop (Mile 33), do the GMR loop and ride with you guys all the way back to the lunch stop (Mile 68) before heading back to Encanto. :)

Just an FYI to give Chuck Bramwell and Mike Burns credit for this routeslip. It is a standard OCW Saturday Century Route that they created and maintain.

From Chino Hills Pkwy, you guys are heading towards Phillips Ranch Mission,Humane Way,Fairplex etc....only to add miles?

From Chino Hills Pkwy you can make a left on Grand. That will take you straight up to Sierra Madre. Make a right then you end up at GMR. But I guess the other way is what makes it a century.:p

Noted, although I got the route slip from last year's ride (also posted on BF). Without their names/organization on the route slip, one would have no idea of its origin.

We used to ride from Chino Hills Pkwy. Left on Grand. Right on Holt ave (not HoltBlvd/Valley BLVD-small street right before the 10 fwy on Grand). Right on Holt. Right on Covina Hills Pkwy. Left on Via Verde up to Raging waters. Left on San Dimas. Right on Bonita. Left on San Dimas Cyn to Rt 66/Foothill (San Dimas Cyn Park), then continue over to GMR.
