You sure some 10-year-old didn't get after it with the dayglo poster paints?

Welcome to the late '80s - the year of fluorescents...

...anyone remember the fluorescent Monogram 1:24th-scale kits produced during this era?

There is a Bottecchia that I see fairly frequently that looks very similar.

The car models that were semi-translucent, flourescent plastic?

There was a very nice bottecchia on ebay I woulda bought if it were my size, it was purple, florescent yellow and chrome!

Lime green [edit: ok, yellow maybe?] and purple ADR team colors? They're hidious! What were they thinking?

Master frame builder Brian Baylis had built this frameset... and even admitted to having painted the bike himself.
It was a custom bike made for a customer back in the 1980s.

This bike recently re-sold for over $3,500 on eBay.
~ No accounting for personal tastes.

Like the... uh... "interesting" ? Day-Glo job which opened this thread, the paint would certainly be a theft deterrent.

Thats it actually, only it was a 53cm!

It doesn't look as appealing there for some reason, guess the purple is too light, those tires are hideous as well!

Not as flourescent but just as weird:

That's right.

On that note, I still wish I had picked up one of the Revell 767-200 kits when they were still around...

Are you certain? This late '80s bike didn't seem to have a flashy paint job.

I never got into the color fade, splash, blotch, and other looks. I generally like monochromatics, such as my charcoal Bianchi, or tasteful two- or three-tone, such as my Capos with their contrasting head tubes or my Team USA red-white-and-blue Schwinn.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned (unless I missed it) that the pic the OP posted is of a Zunow. They were known for those, um, "agressive" paint schemes:

http://www.classicrendezvous.com/Japan/Zunow/Zunow%201.htm

Wouldn't mind owning a Zunow - very nice frames. Almost bought one at a swap meet earlier this year, but it was a little too small. Cool bottom brackets with the hummingbird logo cast in.

thanks for mentioning that, saves me from ranting about it. I'd love a hummingbird, in
all it's florescent dayglo glory.
and to be honest, that zunow isn't so loud

Early '90s. The luminare (I think that is what they were named - have to see if I still own the Monogram catalogue from back then) models were available until at least '93, and they sat on the shelves until '94. I only got one though - I always had my eye on the F250 crew-cab kit...

...and yes, this was before I was wrenching. You don't want to see my Hot Wheels collection from '96-2001 (and I ultimately prefer the '68-'71 Redlines anyway).

Take care,

-Kurt

EDIT: They were "Luminators" - the autos were called "neon racers," the aircraft, "neon flyers." I'll post a scan of the catalogue.

Yes, Zunow certainly did tend towards the flamboyant side. I always thought I would like one too, until I saw one fail at at velodrome and the rider was knocked unconscious for twenty minutes. I realize that their reputation is very good and this was probably an isolated incident, but being there and seeing it happen makes an indelible impression.

Funny how often this topic comes up, guess we can get enough of looking back at the craziness that was the late 80's / early 90's paint schemes! :) As always, here's my submission to the mayhem:

http://photos.thecuda.com/upload/serotta/tn_P2252022.JPG

I 'rescued' my 86 Serotta Nova from this later 80's repaint. It wasn't a very good paint job to begin with and felt the frame deserved a more dignified color and it's true brand name flying down its downtubes once more. :) (link in sig for anyone who has yet to see the after photos)

Yep, the 80ies had a certain something. While Italian design sets many trends, thankfully not *every* one of them is a success...

First of all, the new paint/decals looks fantastic. Second, why on earth did someone turn a Serotta into a Parkpre? Unless I'm mistaken those are two completely seperate companies aren't they?
