I've been car lite for about 7 years now. Monday I was driving to work and was tboned by a hay truck. My car was destroyed. The insurance company has promised to have a check for my by Nov 1st. After a few days of lying around I've decided this is probably an omen that I should be car free again. I wish It hadn't happened in such a dramatic way, but I suppose it's a good thing. I've been planning how I'll get to places I drive to now and I picked up a bus pass as well ( which is free because I'm a part time student). Also I've been thinking how I'll spend the extra money I'll have every month. I'll have 500$ extra every month once I'm not paying insurance, gas, and other car expenses. Just wanted to make me car free-ness official.

Welcome to the club! I was car free/lite for over a year... I owned a truck... but didn't bother to finish fixing it the last time it broke down. It sat in front of our apartments for a year before someone rear ended it at over 100mph. So now I've REALLY been car free for about 6 months. It's ok... not like I was driving it, anyway. ;)

Not an omen, but an opportunity. Many people in your position would be trying to figure how to get a friend to drive them around to the used car dealers. Good luck in seizing the opportunity. :)

Congrats. Bets of luck with it.

Something a lot of folks seem to forget: if you really need a car from time to time, rent one! still comes out cheaper than ownership.

Cheers

I cant wait until lyein the eye comes around and tells you that while you will save 500 a month in auto expenses your grocery bill will increase by 65,043 dollars per week.

I don't think it's possible to spend more on food than I do. It's my #1 expense every month! I've heard the fittter you are the less you tend to eat, because you body is running more efficiently and needs less fuel.

This also a great time of year for it to happen! Once you manage a winter car free, the rest is a snap. Get the "winter bogeyman" behind you right off!

I have a friend who spends 935 dollars per month on food and he lives by himself!!!!!

My wife and I spend $280.00 per month. My friend eats basically all fruits and vegetables and buys most of them from the local hippie health food store.

$280 per month? Are you are your wife vegetarians? I've found that we average about $700-800 per month. That being said we eat meat at every dinner most lunches and I usually have eggs every other day.I'd like to be a vegetarian just to save money! The only problem is I'm not very fond of vegetables. I think our diet is called the caveman/mongolian diet. I'm trying to work in a meatless dinner once a week for now. baby steps.

Not to drift my own thread but I'd love to experiment with seeing how much of my own food I could produce or procure. Is anyone here into self sufficiency in terms of food production?

Our food bill is bit over $400 a month, that does include some convenience foods, because the wife and I travel and usually carry our food with us. We seldom eat out, maybe once a month. In season I buy veggies from local farmers, eggs come from the farm up the road also but we should be getting them from our own chickens next year. Eventually I would like to have goats for the milk and cheese. Most of my meals are vegetarian based with very little meat. When I do eat meat I keep the portions fairly small. I am a carbaholic and thrive on pastas and breads. We do make our own breads and pastries. I try to buy the least processed foods possible. I am convinced that stuff that has massive amounts of additives, preservatives and conditioners added to it can't be good for the body, it is just more chemicals that have to be processed out and get in the way of the real nutrients.

I know most "normal" people wouldn't say this to you right now, but congratulations! :D Also, I'm glad that you didn't get hurt in the accident. Pretty surprising, actually, considering the description!
