Classic & Vintage - Returned with a Rossin, LOTS O' PICS! Need some help as well.

Ok, so I haven't exactly been posting or reading much of the bike forums for a while due to various other interests distracting me...
But here's something I picked up off of ebay, dropped off at a bike shop, etc etc. and right now it's nearly done. Just waiting on a thomson seatpost and a selle italia yellow saddle.
Obviously not going to be for rainy days, but definitely won't be kept as room decoration.

(no that's not how high I like my saddle, that's only there so I can put it on the repair stand)
(yeah, yeah, paint is chipping, guy who shipped it didn't pack it too well and it was well used)

I only have a few questions I hope that someone can answer.
1: As you can probably see on one of the pics... Needs a new chain, and maybe chainrings. Think I can get away with just a chain replacement, or should I replace chain, and chainrings? The cassette still has nice and sharp teeth.
2: Can anyone guess what year/model this might be? Columbus SL tubing and a pearl paint job.
Shimano 600/Ultegra 7sp all around, Wolber TX PROFIL rims. (had cinelli stem and bars).
3: Serial number... can't find one, unless it's a 3-digit number stamped on the BB. BB has 52 and 542 stamped into it. 52 is obviously size. 542? any guess?

Well, enough text, now for some eye candy. It's a pearl purple/blue/off white paint with yellow/orange/black accents. Changes colour depending on the angle you look at it. I like it

Oh, don't worry about my couch/bed, tires are brand new/haven't seen pavement and drive train isn't exactly dripping oil. Not that I would mind getting dirty in bike grease. lol

I cannot tell you much about it (except that it looks great!) but I did track down some information on a Rossin I nearly bought by emailing this man, Andrea Chiarini at andrea@gruppobici.it

He is the head of the Rossin Departmen at GRUPPO BICI, which is the company that now owns the Rossin name. He answered all of my questions and was very helpful.

very nice Rossin, do you think the fork is original? I've never seen one with a tree panto'd on the crown like that...it IS a tree, right? (That paint contains what is called "interference" pigment, guess due to what it does to the light waves when reflected.)

The fork is a replacement that is not the Rossin logo. I recognize it but I can't remember whose logo it is.

The fork came off a Cramerotti.

yep, that's a tree stamped on the fork. My guess is the only original part is the frame and group set.

Pending an answer from Rossin, I believe that the Cyclex designation was added to the Columbus decals in the late 1980s and that SL was discontinued in 1994. So that should narrow it down a bit, though not a lot.

The other thing you can try, since you're located in Toronto, is to take the bicycle around to La Bicicletta. They still carry Rossin and Cramerotti was their house brand, before Giuseppe Cramerotti sold the store and moved back to Vancouver. Maybe they have a long time employee who can shed some more light.

It almost makes me wonder if this frameset originally came form La Bicicletta, with the fork being damaged in shipping and the store replacing it with one of their Cramerotti forks?

but who knows, maybe it did originate from La Bicicletta. There's a few store stickers still on the bike that I'll try and get a pic of when I get home.
I'll try and go to La Bicicletta, but that'll probably have to be on a weekend as it's out of my way and they're not open when I don't have work.

I have an older Rossin(1984ish), and the lugs are completely different. The seat stays have Rossin in raised letters on them and the lug at the down tube/head tube has a Rossin 'R' cutout. The bottom bracket also has an 'R' cutout

Is that a Cinelli Grammo stem? If so, then you have one expensive piece of cockpit jewelry. Great looking bike.

La Bicicletta was originally located in Vancouver, then opened a second store in Toronto, so there is still a good chance that it originally came from one of their stores.

Says West Point Cycles, Since 1930.
But who knows, it's just a sticker after all.
I'll definitely head on over to La Bicicletta on the weekend.

I think your small ring has a few miles left in it but it will be time to replace it soon. I have that same 600 group on my Davidson. Early 90's I think. Very nice bike!

Ok, so I was finally able to go to La Bicicletta. The best that one of the guys could do with the date was around 1990's, doesn't remember what sort of models were present at the time.
