I live in Italy and I'm new too cycling. I've been riding for a little over a year here in Sardinia on my first road bike which is a Italian LBS custiom aluminum frame with shimano 105/ultregra mixed componets. I'm moving back to the states, but I've never cycled stateside. Moving to the Groton/New London Area of Connecticut. I'm looking for fellow cyclists in the area/ LBS's in the area, and an idea of what I can expect of cycling in the area especially the winter time. I'm a southern boy with little expeirence with snow. I plan on commuting to work on the road bike and switching to my MTB during bad weather. Is this doable year round.
Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.
I live in Massachusetts and commute year round, I'm not going to tell you it's a piece of cake, in winter you need to have and carry a lot of different clothes, My commute is 18.5 miles each way, I run Nokian studded tires through the winter months and often ride in cold snow/rain mix. I use a night rider classic light system with a cateye back up in the rear. I use a topeak rack mule and trunck bag, carry panniers three days a week and have planet bike freddy hardcore fenders on the bike. I do have a car but I rather ride. You can do it but it is a commitment. In new england most of the year you will be riding in the dark on at least one end of your commute, the roads stink and the traffic is tense. Other than all that, I wouldn't stop commuting for anything, riding to and from work is the most useful thing you will ever do with your bike. Good luck with your move and good luck with your new adventures commuting.

There is lots of good riding in that area.
Go east/west for fairly flat riding, head north for more hillier rides. What is great is that area is all along the shore, beautiful scenery.
Are you in the service, what brings you to that area?

Navy submariner, I have orders to a boat out of Groton. Thanks for the info on the local biking scene. I will be sure to check these guys out. I just hope my bike shows up when I do so I can get out and about again.
