General Cycling Discussion - warranty on new bikes purchased from a private seller?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hey all, I'm looking to pick up a new Kona that was professionally built. However, it is being sold by a private seller. I am all for supporting the LBS but a few hundred dollars saved, i a few hundred dollars.
Anyone have any idea whether the warranty will still be good or do I need a receipt?

Ever hear the phrase "caveat emptor "?? It means..........Let the buyer beware.
"Under the doctrine of caveat emptor, the buyer could not recover from the seller for defects on the property that rendered the property unfit for ordinary purposes. The only exception was if the seller actively concealed latent defects."
Any sale from a private party on manufactured goods is considerd "used". In the used market
"caveat emptor" is the rule. People who shop used know this is the trade off for the lower price.

Every bike I've ever purchased (and that's about 10) has stated the warranty is only valid to the original owner/buyer. Sounds like you are buying a used bike, you're not the original owner. If he bought the parts then built them up, you're still not the original owner of parts like the frame and components.
No warranty for you! says the 'Warranty Nazi'. I think he was a character on Seinfeld!:p

yeah, and some bike shops will still bend over backwards to get you that warranty if ever needed on that frame. kind of dishonest and unsavory in my opinion.
thanks guys, i've decided to go new anyway...downgrading from a jake the snake to a jake to do it, but it's still a great bike..
