since there seems to be such a small amount of fixed gear riders in this city,
I was wondering how many people from Albuquerque are on this site

Holla. You know me as the dork rocking the brake and helmet that occasionally rides with you and Max. As I'm sure is the case everywhere I've noticed 3x as many fixed gears as were around this time last year. If you remember the Big in Japan alleycat though, there was a sizable group of people. Either way I've seen a ton more people on bikes in general.
If you care we do rides from the Duckpond Clocktower every Wed. at 5. Everyone's welcome no matter the bike, but I think the fact that the majority of us are on fixed gears lends itself toward scaring people from joining us more so than encouraging others to ride.
And have you heard anything from Giant lately? He had been talking about putting together an event when I talked with him a couple of months ago, but he was planning on being out of town for some time and I haven't seen him since. I also want to know if he's savvy on the Fuji Obey.
we should start a fixed gear posse that terrorizes the streets at odd hours.
group rides for sure.
Mikehas been traveling and drawing from what I gather spoke to him a couple times.
please don't move this to rides and races
i would still like to see how many 505 people are on here.
name dropping should be illegal.
name dropping should be illegal.
whats the harm in that.
he rides
yea its all good I guess. A lot of people just do it to get their status level +1 ya know. I guess I could see it's positivity in popularizing single speeds...if ya wanna do that.
its not about status level, I'm old and know I'm king;)
I just like riding bikes with folks not all gussied out in lycra.
trying to find like minded people to F around with.
tricks and just straight riding

just found this in LAFixed.com.
I guess thats why I'm looking for more people here I'm always on LAFixed
but I guess its all wrong (too many apples)
the ride is a scavenger hunt friday at 6:30 in old town then a photo shoot saturday night a 7 at rivial tatto

Rad. Thanks for the heads up.
It's funny. I guarantee I don't know 90% of the people from this town that lurk the boards, but if I were told what bike people are riding or rambled off what I'm riding there would be an 'Aha!" moment.
<---
I might show up to the scavenger hunt on friday... dunno

+1
I think I might show up too.
as far as the posse, we can call it the duke city loksters. haha
Aw. NM in the fall FTW. /me homesick!
No immediate beautiful foliage. But perfect warm sunny days and crisp cold nights. Can't be beat! Doesn't make for bad riding either.
And there's mountains abound if you need to look at funny colored leaves.
Did your family send you any chile? You gotta miss the smell of it roasting.
I think I might show up too.

we got The Cranks 505 and The Goatheadz already
I'm heading to the scavenger hunt with a couple of homies
a few people that i ride with are out of town this weekend
Jake, I am going to give you a call...right now.
Also, about people in Albuquerque, I've been seeing more and more people cruising around on fixed gears. So there are numbers, although i don't know how many people are posting on here. Aside from fixies there are more people riding bicycles around town, which is always good to see.
First off. Name dropping is lame. Someone else already said it. It must be fact. It's the internet for Christ's sake.
Secondly. Goatheadz, The Cranks 505? What about Broken Bonez Velo? Ever consider rocking the Santa Fe Century fixed? Heartbreak hill? More like charge or die hill.
But back to name-dropping. Johnny--the fellow setting up the scavenger hunt--is a solid guy. He also did a Rasta Ride alleycat on 4/20 and mustered more bicycles than I've seen collectively in this area beyond the weekly clickety-clacking roadie cluster**** I spot at Winning's. I swear I've seen bikes there that rival in price that of my entire college tuition and see less use than a single sheet of toilet paper after the coffee sets in.
After closer examination of that flyer I've noticed that anything resembling something other than Chinese bicycle acrobatics has been dropped entirely from the event. I mean, wheelies and backward circles are neato and all, but hopefully this is just a onetime thing. The last thing that the bicycle culture around here needs to do is further establish some "unique fixie culture" that further offsets one rider from the next. I love riding fixed gear as much if not more than the next guy, but hell, bikes in general are just really ****ing cool.
Beside. Any ol' monkey can do tricks on a bike. (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://members.tripod.com/~JKTbike/fir.gif&imgrefurl=http://members.tripod.com/~JKTbike/gif.html&h=290&w=375&sz=69&hl=en&start=1&sig2=MxvUeixu_H_Ay9YExe49mg&um=1&tbnid=WBHYc6zoOtgVUM:&tbnh=94&tbnw=122&ei=gnAhR_PWJ43WgwPLxPlG&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dmonkey%2Bbicycle%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26sa%3DN)
On that note. I should mention I was in fact glad to see I'll be able to make it to the Halloween ride. I know who's going to win it though, so long as he hasn't bent the fork I gave him by that time. Yeah. Ride safe and see you all there hopefully.
we all know Sam will smash everyone at trick hes better than any thing I have seen so far on any youtube video.
as for Mike Saturday night thing it a ploy to get folks over to his Ladys photo shoot for a prodject she is doing.
which is fine.
if any ol' monkey can do tricks, step up Jake:) but watch out for the cars;).
I like long rides ,but some time I just like to F around doing some tricks, no need to be another Bike Forum Jerk about it Elitest.
Hey. As I said I plan on being there. Just need to figure something out that Sam doesn't know. I think I've got one trick up my sleeve that just might do it, but then again, probably not.
I got no skills compared to Sam, and your fast as hell so ,you win
Pfeh. No handed wheelies to wheel grabs are lost to me. I think if there's someone who has a fighting chance it'll be you.
But in all legitimacy two friends of mine and myself started doing training to try a fixed century registered as Broken Bonez Velo. We had secured sponsorship by Whole Foods (where one of my friends worked), but then the same fellow split off to Boston to become a courier. You probably rode with him a couple times. He'd picked up this beautiful vintage lugged SR frame at the flea market, labeled as a "skeleton bike." Came with vintage SR track cranks, bars, stems, Campy record wheels, the whole envy-inducing shibang.
I still ride with the other guy. He's got a silver Fiorelli conversion that one of his professors gave to him set up with a full Campy groupo, down to the pedals, toeclips and spokes. It was too small so he just threw a fixed wheel on.
But I digress. Also, if I meant to mention that we're doing weekly rides from the Duckpond at 5. I don't know if you can make it, but it's a decent size group. Mostly fixed, but we like to have anyone join in. Normally do a ride not too intense, like a section of Bosque trail and back up through Martinez Town or something. I thought it would be slick if we did Indian School and played around in the ditch one of these days.
I'm just jealous of Goatheadz because I don't get to roll with 'em that much. If only rides weren't so few and far between!

I actually laughed a little when i read this. You do need to watch out for those cars Jake.
Oh and yes, Sam will destroy everyone. In all honesty though, i think a lot of the fixie tricks might as well be left to the circus. That's just my opinion. Then again, admittedly, some of the stuff in the new Mash video is damn impressive and some of which even Sam has yet to do.

Arg. What the ****. Is it just widely known about me that I'm a target for the nearest moving 2k lb. hunk of metal or is my luck just that bad? But speaking of watching out for cars, I'm at work right now (Paseo+Wyoming=Carlandia) and just in front of the shop is this enormous gaudy yellow Hummer. I've been staring at the chrome detailed grill just certain the thing wants to see my blood dripping from it in the reflections of strip mall windows.
Or maybe Zach's sacrifice to Hummerdom has temporarily appeased them.
I was only messing with you Jake. I do think it has become common knowledge that you have poor luck when it comes to cars in this town. A shame to say the least. You did get that spiffy new frame out of the last one though and i have heard some talk of people now wanting to get into accidents as a means of making some cash and building a new bike. Maybe you have championed a new trend.
Oh and about Zach. Apparently he was misinformed. For some reason the cop told him it was a hummer, when in actuality it was some huge truck. Even better is that the driver had no insurance and basically ****ed Zach.
Hah! I wasn't actually offended. But it is good to see someone else is bored at work.
That same Hummer almost got spit on when I walked in today, then I realized my boss wouldn't be so happy when the cat followed me in and started yelling at me about it. I've gotten to used to living in that neck of the woods. Up here I'd be lynched for blasphemy of that sort.
so theres like 5 abq heads?
so theres like 5 abq heads?
In regards to being on this forum, i suppose so.
Jake: yes, i am very bored and starving. Oh and my co worker went home sick and i am stuck here alone to deal with countless idiots.

I know for a fact there's several other Burquenos that lurk the Commuter forum as well. I managed to get one of them to join our Wednesday ride. Solid dude.
And apparently my co-worker is on holiday. My boss was sweet enough to talk about how slow it had been all morning which automatically slotted me into being slammed shortly after he left. The past 3 hours have been chaotic. For the 2 out of 5 people on SS/FG that don't know me, I ride a huge purple bike around. A so called 2-wheeled, 2-horned, flying purple people eater.
Oh, and dirtylaundry. All those beautiful bikes you've seen on the internet? They belong to sniks.
can i move to NM and be friends with you guys. the NE winters suck. im so not into snow this year.
can i move to NM and be friends with you guys. the NE winters suck. im so not into snow this year.
Heck yes. Winters are mild and dry. When it snows, it's gone within a few hours the next day. We had a brutal winter last year, but it was one in a hundred. It's supposed to be warm and sunny this year. Summers get hot for a couple of weeks, but it's dry so it doesn't impede anything. Then it rains every other day for the second half and keeps things cool. Rain gear is nonexistent. People stop to watch and enjoy it.
Traffics not bad. MUPs and bike lanes abound. Growing cycling community. Best local food in the country. Mid-size city with small-town feel. Manana attitude encourages people to slow down and enjoy things--although can get frustrating. Cool area too. Mountains everywhere, Santa Fe not far off. Enjoy skiing/snowboarding? Hiking/backpacking? Hot springs, cliff diving? Rock climbing? Cradle of the atomic age. Disjointed land of excess and bare minimalism.
People here are splitting out for Portland, which admittedly is a cool town. But I dig things here just fine.

Yes, yes, YES, YYYEESSS, YES!!! Damn. I think i might have found my new home.
Um, i have visited your city for two days when me and a friend of mine went on a cross country road trip in like 01 to pick up his sister and some stuff. We went to a hiking trail. (was too stoned at that time of my life to remember which one) and when we got back to the car, our trunk was crowbarred open and a lot of **** was stolen. is this par for the course there? I mean, philadelphia is ghetto city,so this is not dissuading me but it seemed so nice there that i thought this has to be rare. am i wrong?

This is rather rare as far as I know. Of all the people i know only 1 person had had their car broken/broken into by someone else (happened twice haha). But regardless you will find this no matter where you move, you just got very unlucky haha.
But I love it here, you can't beat the food and supposedly we have one of the most biker friendly cities in the country.
Bummer. Most of the hiking trails in the foothills are surrounded by upper-middle class neighborhoods, so that sounds more like pisspoor luck. Don't get me wrong, this town can be rough as I'm sure anyone else on here's willing to mention, but moreso in the poor drug-ridden areas of town.
Hollywood and tech industry has entered the picture so more money is being pumped into the area to keep dirty business in check but it doesn't entirely prevent it from happening. Nevermind, it occurred to me that money is put in the burb sprawl that's infecting the West Mesa.
There's a ton of unique neighborhoods around here though and the city just celebrated it's tricentennial so there's a lot of set local traditions and culture that can't be beat. If you like spicy food this place is Mecca. If you don't, it will become your Mecca.
i was just wondering if it was rough alltogether or if i just had pisspoor luck.(which i figured was the case, as is most of my life.) I live about 4 blocks away from the "most deadly corner in the city" so i was just guaging HOW much safer it is there. (plus give some input to that old friend of mine) So, cool. Im gonna start looking around, cause i wanna leave philly for a while, but am def. coming back here at some point, and had this particular town in mind. Plus, i like habaneros.
It's Hatch Green Chile here. Or Red. Hell, why not make it Christmas? I spent about 5 years in Philadelphia growing up and loved it. Living somewhere with full fledged seasons just makes living somewhere with pretty mellow weather all the sweeter.
The University area is the place to look into. It's smack dab in the middle of everything going on. Close access to bars, shows, good restaurants, people, parties, you name it. If you ever follow through and decide to check it out hit me up, we can see about giving you a place to crash and a tour of the area.
Apparently Jake is the new spokesperson/salesman for Albuquerque.
In my opinion, Albuquerque isn't bad. If you are looking for what Jake listed than you may enjoy it. It is certainly a place you grow to appreciate. I find that whenever i go out of town, i always enjoy Albuquerque a little more when i come back. It all depends on what you are into. You should know though that the city is notorious for always being three to five years behind the times. So, if you are looking to live somewhere wherein a majority of the people are up to date on all of the latest, this is not the place for you.
Some negative points: other cities possess better contemporary art scenes, better art museums, better record stores, better book stores. Just to name a few.
Note: Those negative points are all things i care about. I have no idea if you do.
those negative points had crossed my mind, and are things i do tend to care about, but hell, if i cant find any record or book i want online.
And, like i said. I just want to get away from the east coast for a while, and think i have the opportunity to soon, and have been thinking NM, so we'll see where the wind blows.
Thanks guys for the info.

1)Mayor Marty hired me! Then we rode bicycles in his new promotional TV campaign. Straight to Spearmint Rhino. Them titties were off the hook.
2)This was addressed with the manana attitude thing. I think we're catching up on the times, but ****, I'm more than willing to sit around and smoke muh corn cob pipe.
3)It's called amazon.com, Spencer. But yeah, it sucks not having greater access to these things. Santa Fe just pisses me off when it comes to art, but then again I'm not the artsy type. Either way, I lived in Oklahoma before I came here, so maybe that's why I'm sold on it.

1. **** Marty. I did some work down at the Bosque putting in new trees after the fire. He came by with the press, put some dirt on his hands, picked up a shovel, and had the photo shot. Then he left.
2. The attitude has it's benefits but more so negative points a lot of the time. For one reason or another Albuquerque tends to still have a very hillbilly mentality, which can be frustrating. In no other city have i been yelled at while riding or walking as much as i have been here.
3. I support local Jake! Oh and come on, if you're going to be ordering music at least do it through someone more grassroots, such as insound.
I was riding straight down Harvard the other day and some prick crossing the street stares at me coming toward him and as I pass he says "**** you ***hole," not realizing that just because I'm moving at a faster rate I won't just turn around. I stopped to ask him why he'd said what he did then he rambled off that I had intended to scare him and some other nonsense. Either way it was worth a laugh. I didn't know that other people knew exactly my thoughts or something. Albeit I was a bit thrown off by it.
I think it has to do with the size of ABQ. Those people that yell at you are car-centric upper-middle class suburbanites who drive to our part of town to eat at Flying Star, get some froo froo drink at Satellite then catch some anti-neo-conservatism flick at the Guild so they can feel cultured. Or just just crazy drugged out poor folk in a rampage to get to Wal-mart. I get a kick out of it, because you can just get on the suburbanites and scare 'em or just do something simple to further enrage the Wal-mart goers.
I don't really order music either. If I do it's through an in-town shop. Typically yours.
Oh, and I think if people quit spending half their time *****ing about how backwards we can be and dedicated their efforts into actually being involved or getting others involved in certain things it would be a lot cooler. It's a tough cycle to break though. We've been trying to do it with the bikeshare and those group rides but people just seem more willing to sit in ignorant complacency. That and there's just a ton of hippies I suppose.
God I'm bored.
Ditto on the being bored. Only an hour and a half or so to go.
I think one of the funniest things in Albuquerque is seeing how many times in a day someone will drive by and call you any of the popular homophobic slurs.
The reality is that I like it here, although; I don't plan on living here forever. Only a little bit longer and then i am off to grad school.
hey did any of you cats show up tonight and not introduce yourself?
**** was fun.
I know senor lanky pants wasn't there(klink) but got no faces for the rest of you.

Do you mean to that scavenger hunt jammy jam? I think that was last night. I unfortunately had to work. Glad to hear it was a good time though.
i was there last night, and last night was really nice, especially since we rode home with a gift certificate for a keg. really the best bike event i've been to in a long time. i occasionally check this board. my name is scott, i ride bikes. alot. i think i've met mr. jake, and maybe some others on here.
please dont move here though! you'll get mugged, robbed, and beaten. your bike will get stolen and you'll get the poops from the water. there's nothing to do and the weather sucks. (ie: its only good until everyone else catches on and mucks it all up)
hello albuquerque! i just moved here from florida (land of the moronic mouse and election theivery). you guys just don't appreciate how cool of a city you have (we were on our way to seattle and liked abq so much we decided to stay). people are so much friendlier here than anywhere else i've lived or visited.
the bike scene here is frickin' sweet! i've never seen so many bike lanes in one place. last night i went on the scavenger hunt, had an f-in great time. the climb up mlk was insane... i almost puked when i got to unm! there actually are quite a few fixies here, what a turnout. i ride the rising sun/candy cane fuji. hope to see y'all at the goathedz run tonight. peace....
I just escaped ABQ. Sniks, that bike you grabbed for me is completely different now. Pics soon, but I'm rockin' 50/16 on some pretty serious hills. I'll be out there in April at the latest, and we'll ride.
