I'm talking about the city or the immediate surroundings. I go to WSU, and see some nice fixies/SS on campus. Where are they coming from?
Where are they coming from?
From people building them from thrift store/yard sale/cl found road bikes and their (or friends) blood, sweat, and sometimes tears. Or buying on off the shelf mercier/windsor/fuji, Bianchi pista, Schwinn Madison, etc. from a local bike shop/ebay. There is a "bike shop" on Livernois and McNichols (6 mile) across from U of D that sells used bikes, but the one and only time I was ever in there they had a bunch of overpriced junk. Do you have $300 and fit a 49, 55, or 59cm frame check out the rental Bianchi Pistas Bloomer Velodrome is unloading on CL http://annarbor.craigslist.org/bik/456144491.html

Thanks for the input. I saw the bikes for sale from the velodrome, but they aren't exactly what I have in mind--I was looking for something with a bit more "character", if you know what I mean... At any rate, several of the ss bikes I've seen around WSU look pretty well put together--I figured that perhaps there was a "recycled bikes" type shop or even coop, like I've seen in other cities.
Believe me, I've been trolling craigslist for some time for a suitable conversion, but I just haven't found the right frame.
There is http://www.backalleybikes.org/, but I don't know what they are about exactly. I haven't been there so I don't know if they really sell anything.
Considering that a fixie/ss is about the most caveman of bikes, I don't think you'd *need* a bike shop that specializes in them.
Kina akin to looking for a restaurant that specializes in making ice water - it's so simple, a caveman can do it! :D
