Hello,
I went to the Lemond web-site, and the Alpe D' Huez has a steel fram, with carbon forks.
I went to the LBS today, and the Alpe D' Huez they had there, was AL frame, with carbon forks.
Whats up with that?

Odd... I didn't think LeMond bikes came in aluminum. I thought they were either steel or titanium (some with ti and carbon) but no aluminum. Are you sure the label at the LBS was correct?
As a matter of coincidence, I happen to know a guy who rides an aluminium Alpe d'Huez (he's in the UK). Maybe the Lemond line-up varies from country to country/continent?

it is possible that the LBS had an older model.. I know that some of the Lemonds from a couple years ago were AL... Did the paint scheme match from the web to the LBS ?

no, it was that only the US lemonds are steel.
I guess you learn something new everyday. I wonder what the marketting strategy behind that was. Did they want to keep LeMond in the US "pure" and not compete against Trek or Klein with aluminum frames? Are the steel and ti LeMonds also offered in conjunction with the Al frames overseas? Where are the Al frames produced?

Did you ever wonder why trek doesnt make steel?Because LeMond does.Thats trek line of steel bikes so to speak.

Green? Is that the colour of the international models? The Alpe D' Huez we get here in the US is a very classy silver or less appealing (IMHO) orange. Of course it's also a nice 853 frame.

It was dark green and white. It was a US model though. I saw the silver on the website. That would have been cool. Im not sure where the green came from.

I figured it out. It was a left over 2002 model. It looked just like this.

It looks like someone shined that frame up, Longrider. The ones I see on the road aren't quite that bright. It's a nice bike for $999, with full 105 setup.
Is there a Chain Reaction near you, Shokhead? They are right across the Bay from me, and I'm kicking myself while they have Trek 5200's on sale for $2,399 right now.
Good riding.

"bike specifications may vary outisde the US"
I think that pretty much says it all. I really want a steel version of this bike, what would be the best way to go about ordering one from the US? Maybe talk to one of the bigger LBS's around here, or order online or something?
BTW, the current colour scheme on both the AL and Steel is Silver with a bit of orange in the middle of top & seat tubes, and black and orange stripes on fork.

hi bmw,
I recently purchased a 2001 alp d'huez (red and white) here in Australia.Yes it's alloy but made in USA and rides great. The current model (can't stand the colour) is made in Asia. What I understand back in 2001 Lemond made the Alp D'huez and the Chambery in alloy. Both are fine bikes but not as comfortable as their steel siblings.Since then I believe Trek has bought the rights to Lemond and is now producing a few models out of asia. When i was buying my Alp' my LBS also had a very nice steel "Zurich" in my size with only 600km on the clock . But sanity and more so my bank account won on the day.A few of the guys in the shop ride the Zurich and rave on about it.So where does this leave you?Maybe you should look at the Buenos Aires. It's Reynolds 853 steel and shouldn't cost more than $1000 aud extra.Good luck, and let us know how you went.
