I just drove up to GMR (Glendora Lone Hill start area). BIG BOLD letters on the lighted sign saying 'FOREST CLOSED/EXTREME FIRE DANGER'!!!!!!!.
I drove up to the big steel gate. Another sign (billboard type) right behind the gate saying 'No Tresspassing Private property/Keep Out!!!!!!!!! Extreme Fire Danger!
When I was backing up to turn around a ranger pulled on us with a spotlight. He said the road was closed to all, didn't know how long but nobody was allowed up the road. I didn't ask as the sign said 'forest closed' but I assumed it was the entire road.
Guy was all up on me before I knew what was happening. More than likely watching out for arson punks!
Also posted in Maria's GMR ride thread!

That's too bad ... but not really surprised at all, with all the arsonists going around. I actually expected that.

It will probably be totally closed until there's a good rain or two. That's pretty much how it went down last time.

Yeah, I bet the locals are very happy though. I would be!:)...As much as I hate the road closed to cyclists, I more than understand under the present circumstances. AND that ranger was doing a great job cause he was all over me like............well you know!:D
The Angeles Forest closed on 10/23. Same with the Cleveland Forest. Not too sure about San Bernardino.

Anybody know how far is GMR closed? Could I do the 39/Ridge Road loop, or is that section climbing from east fork shut down?

San Bernardino mountains are also closed.
I went with some friends and rode in Joshua Tree yesterday. It was pretty nice out there. Smoke started getting kinda nasty as we went towards the 29 Palms Entrance, but was ok out towards the Cottonwood entrance, and the Yucca Valley side. Only problem with J-Tree is there's no water available anywhere *inside* the park, just at the entrances/visitor centers. So you hafta plan accordingly.

Anybody know how far is GMR closed? Could I do the 39/Ridge Road loop, or is that section climbing from east fork shut down? I would figure that Little GMR is closed as well. It was for a couple of years until last year from the 2003 fire. The same situation exhists in the Los Padres Forest too. Everything but the main road is closed including the Wheeler Gorge Campground. FYI the main roads in all of these forest are open but that's it. You can ride AC to Newcombs I'm sure, just don't leave the road. I rode Little T this morning and it was open but there was a sign at Bear Divide saying the forest was closed and the gate to the Camp 9 road was locked when I came back down. The firemen were cool but I didn't hang around Camp 9 long. Joe[ their dog] was uneasy and barked as usual. I talked to a couple of guys up there. They were grateful for some rest, brave men. 2 choppers were parked there, I guess they aren't needed now.

See below. The first paragraph is of interest to me - this sounds like we can just ride it anyways.
With the exception of Littlerock, most forest roads that are closed to vehicle traffic are open to hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian use, but the users must be aware of possible administrative traffic.
Current Road Closures
The Angeles Crest Highway (SR2) is closed between Islip Saddle and Vincent Gap (indefinitely because of several washouts). (State)
Glendora Mountain Road - Closed from Big Dalton Rd. to East Fork, due to fire danger. (County)
Chantry Road is closed due to fire danger (City of Sierra Madre)
Ridge Route from Lake Hughes Road to Templin Highway - All modes of transportation (Forest Service)
Highway 39 - Closed from just above the west fork of San Gabriel Canyon (State)
The gate to Skyline Park Picnic Area and the observatories is open from April 1 through November 30, 10:00am to 4:00 pm.

I'll print up that info from that site and show it to the ranger if I get stopped. I've been carrying that paragraph around for years. That list's the closed roads when the forest is open. The forest is closed now and the only roads allowed are the main through ones. Any road with a closed gate is off limits. I rode on AC last Saturday and it was fine as long as you don't stop or go off the road. We got water at Clearcreek and the ranger was friendly but he was baracading some trails with tape. The sheriff at Newcombs said the same thing. If you stay on the main roads and don't go around any locked gates it's ok. It's actually pretty nice up there now. Just as many motocycles but way less cars, they can't park anywhere. You have to ride up from Foothill, but that's ok.In past years the closure has lasted till we get some good rain.http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/angeles/news/2007/news-2007-10-23-forest-closure.shtml
