+1. I just placed an order for the headlamp, seeing as the one I already had was stolen along with my father's bike, which I was using as a backup while my bike was out of service for repairs. I also didn't receive the tailight mount when I bought the taillight a few weeks ago, so this was a great opportunity to ask for that and kill two birds with one stone.
Do the batteries go in the lamp or outside the lamp?
Gojohnnygo.

Do the batteries go in the lamp or outside the lamp?
Outside. They are held in battery holder that goes inside a canvas bag that straps to your bike.
How many NiMH AA's does it take to power the light?

Dang it. I just bought the 200L a week ago for full price. Maybe I can pick-up a taillight. Have to think about that.
Dang it, like I need more lights.... :D

Four (4).
Not five, neither three, excepting that thou shalt proceed to four.

is this light worth spending 100 bucks on? is it bright enough that i'd be able to only use one and be able to see where i'm going in complete darkness? is it gonna shoot out in one specific spot without that much flood? or will there be enough flood to see around me? and does anyone have any action shots of it?

Four shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shalt be four. Five shalt thou not count, nor either count thou three, excepting that thou then proceed to four. Five is right out. Once the number four, being the fourth number, be reached, then lobbest thou Dinotte 140 lumen beam towards thou cager, who being naughty in my sight, shall divert him around thee.

is this light worth spending 100 bucks on?
Yes, worth $100.
is it bright enough that i'd be able to only use one and be able to see where i'm going in complete darkness?
Depends on other conditions and riding terrain. If road, yes - but you may outrun it at higher speeds. Singletrack - not without a supplemental helment spot.
is it gonna shoot out in one specific spot without that much flood?
The lens is more of a flood versus a spot beam.

there are plenty of shots on the internets
it is bright enough to use as a red headlight if you want. it is bright as a niterider minewt X2 only red.
why is this better than one of those flash lights all you guys love??

+1 definitely worth it, I've been waiting for the taillight to go on sale, and so I just ordered one as well. I have the head light and it's the best thing for the money!

I realize it's only $100 bucks, but it doesn't come with everything. No batteries, charger or helmet mount. Is it really on sale then? Nashbar has them here (http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?category=6000101&subcategory=60001067&brand=&sku=15430&storetype=&estoreid=&pagename=Shop%20by%20Subcat%3A%20Front%20Lights) with 20% off going on now. Which is the better deal then?

Are you sure that is the same light? The Nashbar advertises 120 lumens. The Dinotte-on-sale one is 200 lumens
Besides, whether this is a good sale or not depends on:
- Do you have extra rechargeable batteries lying around or would you need to buy more? (approx $10 for a 4-pack)
-Do you have a charger available? A charger similar to the one that comes with it cost about $20 if bought separately
- Do you plan to mount it on your handlebar only? A helmet mount will set you back $14 at the Dinotte website
So if your answer is yes to two or more questions, i'd say it is a good sale. Otherwise, not so much

Beamshots are here (http://acidinmylegs.blogspot.com/2007/05/200l.html). Comparing the Dinotte to other lights beamshots here. (http://www.gearreview.com/2007_led_lights.php)
The front light is ~$150-$170 USD (from what I've seen around the web before. The tailight is ~$125-$140 so you are having considerable savings plus if you're states side you only pay like $3 s/h per light I think where as we north of the 49th parallel pay more.
200lumens is bright. I can't think of what to compare that too if you've not seen high powered LED lights before. If you have a 3W maglite factory retrofit upgrade light I think that's around 130lms. I could be wrong. I have Seoul SSC P4 LED's here for my own DIY lighting so I know what near 200lm is and it hits you in the face bright.
I think Dinotte has broke even on thier front/tail lights and started dropping the price to get more buyers.

I don't like the Dinotte helmet mount. I'd suggest buying a Twofish LockBlock as a helmet mount if you're looking to mount the light on your helmet.
The tail light is well worth the $100. Hands down the brightest thing out there.
Just ordered the 200L headlight and a helmet mount. I think $118 shipped is a good deal. I noticed they also have the full headlight package (charger, batteries, helmet mount) for $160 thru Friday. (next week?) The units Nashbar and Performance have on sale appear to be an older model. I have a bunch of NiMH AA's and a charger, so that part is all set.
Did anyone else notice what I'm assuming is a joke on their checkout page that sales tax is only charged on deliveries to NH?

Probably not a joke. I think the tax code only requires sales tax on Internet sales to states in which the vendor has a brick 'n mortar store located. I'm pretty sure Dinotte is based in NH, may sell stuff out of the factory/HQ, but nowhere else.
yogi13: True, however when I lived up there (20 years ago!), NH didn't have a sales tax (and it was political suicide to propose one and made for interesting official theater with Massachusetts every so often). Looks like they still don't have one: New Hampshire does not have a general sales tax or an income tax on an individual's reported W-2 wages. (http://www.nh.gov/revenue/gti-rev.htm) Hence my assumption they were being ironic. (No charge for sales tax unless shipping to a state that doesn't charge sales tax.)
Back on topic - in a few days, I'll be able to compare it with the 10w Planet Bike unit I use now.

This is great timing because I was all ready to pay full price on the tail light. I'm glad I read this post. My only concern is even with the new tail light mount, that my leg will still rub against the mount. Do you think Dinotte will still honor a 30 day return policy on this sale item?

I got my 120L version from Nashbar today, and jeezus, it rocks.
However... I'm going to ask Nashbar if I could return it. If the 120 is this good, I want the 200 since it's even brighter with slightly better battery life.
Even if Nashbar won't take it back, I'll either keep it or find someone else who wants it.
What does need have to do with it? :D
You are absolutely right :D

Nashbar should. I originally bought mine from nashbar. About 5min after placing the order I emailed dinotte with a general question. Ended up talking to Rob and buying the same light plus taillight the same night. When the Nashbar light came in I turned around and just mailed it back.

Beamshots are here (http://acidinmylegs.blogspot.com/2007/05/200l.html).
It's mentioned on that page that a nice combo could be the wider-projecting 120L (that I got today) and the more-direct 200L.
Oh, okay... guess I'll get yet another headlight... ;)

just pulled the trigger, $105 shipped to california for the headlight. hopefully its as good as people said, spending 105 bucks on a light is tough for a college student :(
holy fark ! I just got the light it is FARKING BRIGHT
It is everything they say and wow I blinded myself. the light and battery pack
are smaller than they appear on the internets....
and the light modes are sweeeeet.
hold switch for 6 seconds to switch between blink mode or solid mode
then it will stay in the mode until you hold switch for 6 seconds again.
other switch presses under 6 seconds run you through the light levels in whatever
main mode the light is in.
pretty neat idea
this is a good deal I saved 40 bucks off the standard cost of a light minus charger
damnable

Hmm interesting, particularly the tail light...well actually both since I discovered last night I had misplaced my headlight.
With the tail light, is this the same Dinotte that I hear everyone talking about over here?
As in the one that is insanely bright and so so so worth it?
Also, does anyone know if these will take normal (unrechargeable) AAs...it's just a have a whole heap hanging around the house. I am also presuming that aftermarket rechargeables will be fine, as long as you get the right batteries and charger?

I'm tempted, but even with this offer, it's still twice the price of a Fenix L2D. Is it WORTH twice as much?

It'll be even more expensive once you factor in shipping, VAT, and duties.

That's with all the shipping.
Hard to say what the better deal is, but I just ordered a Fenix L2D CE Premium Q5 as a super-duper front blinky for under £50 shipped to Latvia with the bracket.
I chose this over the Dinotte because it can be a multi-use item. The Dinotte is only good for the bike, and in two years there will be MUCH better LEDs on the market. 200 lumens really isn't enough in an urban environment. A 180 lumen torch on the other hand is plenty for camping, around the house, and such.

I can get a Cree L2D for £38.95 shipped, and was considering one for a helmet light. I just ordered a little 5 LED light from eBay for a helmet light, but when I saw the price of the Fenix, it got me thinking. The Dinotte was the only relatively high powered light I'd take seriously, and at £100, it was still out of range. The Fenix for so much less suddenly became a sensible idea - after all, that's less than the price of a Cateye EL530! The Dinotte is so cute and all, and at this price is tempting, but I still think the Fenix would be a better bet for me, plus I can wait til I can really afford it, rather than having to stump up for it today, and not buy something else that would've been higher up the list this month.

People with experience say that it takes two flashlights to replace one Dinotte. And they are much more subject to bumps and sensitive to alignment, a bad combination. A Dinotte for the bar and a Fenix for the helmet is the way to go.

That kind of thinking applies to lots of products. But if the Dinotte meets your needs now, what more do you need?
My wife's car is 8-years old but she will not replace it until deteriorating performance and economics dictate it. She kept her last car 10 years.
Dinotte offered an attractive upgrade for the Ultra 5 which was 120 lumens to the 200 lumen 200L. AFAIK they are the only manufacturer to do this. I don't know if the 200L will be able to be upgraded. Good question for Dinotte.
I just realized something, the 200L on sale is the AA version, which is not compatable with the Li-Ion system I have collected on the 600L-LI and 140L-LI.

I'm certainly not buying two at the present time. I have a variety of bar mounted lights which serve me well, so I think for the present time, a Fenix on my helmet will be the next move, and perhaps next winter I'll look at a Dinotte or something similar. I'm already better lit than I've ever been without purchasing ANY of these!

Do you mean the 140R-Li?
Why would compatability be a problem? There would not be any reason to run a 200L on the bar with a 600L so no compatability issue there with running both lights from the same battery and you would definitely not want to run a helmet mounted light from a frame mounted battery so no compatability problem with the taillight either.
Is it the fact that you don't already have a battery charger and rechargeable batteries or did you just want the advantage of Lithium ion battery?

My 140L-Li is a Lithium Ion version that came with a 2 cell Li-Ion pack. Compatibility in that I can not use any of my Dinotte Li-Ion packs with the 200L-AA I just ordered, esp that sexy 2 cell Li-Ion that came with my 140L-Li
Sure I have a bunch of AA Ni-MH batteries and chargers (from my cameras) that I can use, but it would have been nice if I could have just used my Dinotte Li-Ion packs. I could have added the 200L to the bar with the 600L using the Y-connector for that added punch.... Or put it on my helmet with the 2 cell Li-Ion, or for whatever crazy reason we chose to do what we do.
I just wish I would have read that before I bought one. Now it's more like just a novelty to me as I'm not sure where I'll use it other than my helmet. I just wished it was all battery compatible.
Oh well....

Apparently it has shipped already.... However I suppose I could send an email to Rob
If I return it I'll have to eat the $20 shipping, I may as well keep it & use it, or sell it. If Rob has indeed sent it out already....
You are right though, an email wouldn't hurt, thanks :)
