Northern California - any younger riders in the hayward-fremont area?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

cycling is fun but it gets boring when you ride by urself and there is no one your ability and age to occasionally compete with just for fun. i have friends that ride but they are too slow to make any ride interesting. i'll do a couple of club rides and centuries every once in a while but 99.999999% of the riders are over 30 years old with families so they can't really relate to a 20 year old college student lol. don't get me wrong the, the older riders are great, super nice, and I enjoy riding with them. It's just different.

I hope you are not trolling.

If you really want a challenge then go look for and join some A ride club rides.

OTOH, most of the faster and stronger riders in the tour are in their late 20's to mid 30's.

I'm not fast enough to hold 23+ average on flats like the older veterans. But I don't average 11-14 mph on flats like my friends either. and no i'm not trolling lol.
the tour guys are in a different league. more locally, the guy that won the Diablo Challenge in 2006 was 51. So i'm not saying older people are slow.

Then you should join one of the NorCal group rides. Some of us maintained a 19-20 mph paceline during parts of the Calaveras ride.

At the pace he listed, he'd be shot out the back like cannon fodder.;)

Try the ride out of Newark Java tomorrow at 8:15 AM. That's an "M" paced ride, which means up to 16 mph on the flats with no wind, but they usually end up riding faster. If that ride is not enough for you, start showing up at our "B" paced rides. Newark Java is in the Raley's parking lot on the corner of Newark Blvd and Jarvis. It's in the strip mall building behind the Shell station. Don't park in the row in front of the stores, go one row out, straight out the door from the Hawaiin BBQ.

If you think you're definitely above the "M" pace by the ride description page, show up for Mike Williams ride in downtown Niles at 8:45 AM. I think the parking lot is fenced off right now, but they start from around the public restroom on the railroad side of the street.

Here are the stats of a ride I did a while back to coyote hills, then to niles, and then to mission:

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/3596179

So would that be a M or B ride? I commute on bicycle to CSUEB everyday usually averaging 14 mph including Harder Rd. and on the way back, I can average 21 mph.

I usually prefer cycling to ride destinations instead of driving. Sometimes I will take BART. But the Newark Java doesn't sound too far away. Where does the Niles ride start?

I don't really consider age to be a factor when you evaluate a rider's abilities. Some 50+ kick my butt going up King's Mountain Road. You just have to find the right crowd.

h2o_polo_boi
10-29-07, 11:29 PM
well i really don't mind ability level as much as finding more younger riders. my theory to why riders my age are almost non-existent is because they either don't want to invest in road cycling or don't have the money for it. they rather get a car i suppose and cool gear to go with it haha

With an 18mph average, that's a B pace, but almost an F paced ride.
The ride starting in Niles was this past Saturday. Check the Ride Calendar on Fremontfreewheelers.org regularly to see if there's a ride you like coming up. Membership until the end of the year is half price after July 1st, so it's $10 (not that I'm the membership guy or anything).
The start location in downtown Niles is where there's a public toilet(light colored brick building) near the sidewalk in the parking lot by the old train station that's up on blocks. The parking lot was fenced off last time I was there, but since you ride there just wait on the sidewalk by the restrooms. If you have any questions about the ride or start location, you can e-mail or call the ride leader, as their info is on the ride schedule, or go to "About Us" on the toolbar on our website and e-mail or call the membership guy(me), and I'll give you directions.

Not hills. Just one. THE Hill hahaha http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/3878515

and it's at a commute speed with about 10-15 lbs worth of school materials (books, binders, etc.) on any given day. the hill is a 10% avg grade for about 0.76 miles with one section of 37.7%. Since you live locally, you can probably try it. It's Harder Rd. The road that goes up to CSUEB.

You might be correct, but that average would actually be an F paced ride. I've been dropped on an M paced ride while going uphill on Warm Springs at 22mph. A B paced ride should be maximum 19mph on the flats with no wind.

my bikes are nothing more than more than humble contraptions with 105 and ultegra components at best and weighing in more than 20 lbs. yet i'll still drop freds, posers, and the like. it's not about the bike, it's about the engine. how young exactly are you "young 'uns"?

It's a mixed crowd, mostly young once. They just did Mt. Diablo (http://siclista.blogspot.com/2007/11/mt-diablo-pictures-11-4-07.html) without me :(

It looks like the next ride is Mt Ham this weekend and prolly the starting point will be by REI / Home Depot parking lot in South Fremont. I surely will ride this weekend if I'm not too beat up.

ya i pulled the plug on the century ride as the weather looked nasty...i ended up on the FFBC team ride up to Mt. Hamilton CC. We also stopped early at Grant Ranch and turned around because of impending grey clouds...we did make it back dry though so all in all it was a nice ride.

the few people I did run into I kept thinking of this thread wondering if I was passing fellow forum posters =o)

My 17 y/o son plays water polo for the local HS and he is excellent shape. I've been trying to get him on a bike but he hates riding for some reason. I think it's great training for the off season but he'd rather swim in the rain. Don't know here you are but if you are close to the East Bay and wanna ride with a fellow h20 boi, let me know. I've offered to buy him a good road bike but he turned it down. He turned down a free road bike with Ultegra bits for a some new Speedos!?

That looks like it, where the public restroom is. The parking lot itself is fenced off for construction. Sometimes rides have started where the parking lot is still open, down by I or J streets, closer to the car wash.

After being off the bike for a week, I decided to ride again so I officially had my first ride with the Freewheelers today. It was a 4 on the climbing scale (we climbed Harder Rd. to Fairview and then the Dublin Grade) and the pace was M-B. Turned out to be a B. Honestly, on the flats I was able to manage fairly well. Most of the time I was pulling up front. On the climbs, especially up Harder, I had to wait around for 5-10 minutes for people to catch up. I was riding with one of the racers on the Freewheelers team. He had his uniform and eventually we went ahead of the group and waited for the rest to catch up. The funniest part was me getting dropped at the end on Niles Canyon. Today was a very windy day so I was pulling in the front for the group. I was going hard for about 3 miles when everybody decided to turn it up to 25 mph and drop me during the last 4 miles
