Southern California - Post-Thanksgiving Ride (San Bernardino Area)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hey folks, a Norcal intruder trolling down here. I will be down in the San Berdoo area for Thanksgiving and would love to meet up for a ride with any locals. I keep hearing that there are some hills down there, but I want to see for myself if there is anything decent in the area (Inland Empire). Visiting family, so I don't want to drive too far and I would like to keep it around 40 miles in the interests of time. Anyone interested in organizing something?

Welcome to the Socal forum, Roja.
I'll be in town from Texas the same week and been trying to drum up some of the locals to get a ride organized either Friday or Saturday after Turkey Day but haven't had much luck thus far. 40mi sounds about right to me, but probably not at the elevation gains you're thinking. One of these days I'll work on my climbing skills and endurance, but it's kinda hard to do around Dallas.

Some of us are doing the short version of the Baldy Challenge that weekend. You guys might be interested in doing that.

There are regularly scheduled group rides, on weekends, leaving from Stell coffee & tea, in Redlands. Usually 7:15 - 7:30 on Saturdays (We ride from there over to Riverside and meet up with the Raincross group ride. This one is closer to 60 mi. r/t and pretty fast.), and 8:00 on Sundays. Sunday's ride is usually a little more casual pace, but still probably closer to 50 mi.
There's nothing officially scheduled, but I'd be willing to bet if you were to show up there the Friday after Thanksgiving, around 8:00, there'd be a group getting ready to roll. There generally has been in the past.
You might also check the Redlands Water Bottle transit page (http://www.rwbtc.org/), to see what they have scheduled.
Doesn't look like they have anything posted for November, yet.

My wife might be working that Fri and Sat, so I'll definitely be looking for some nice rides to do.
Thanks guys- the Redlands ride might be perfect.
Has anyone climbed 38 from Redlands/Mentone to Big Bear? Looks like an awesome climb, but it might be on busy roads and therefore dangerous?

38 to Onyx Summit is part of the Breathless Agony ride a few of us did last May. BigBear is another 10 miles down from OS. Section you mention is from mile 47 on of the profile! I think the roads are actually nice compared to the opposite direction to Big Bear (hwy330?). The climb is popular among the cyclists so most of the vehicular traffic is aware that there are cyclists on the road.
Same weekend is Matteo's Baldy Challenge. Some will start from the bottom of Baldy/GMR. There should be atleast 15 to accompany you if you attend. From The base should be a similar ride to the rt you mention. Drive from Berdoo should be about 45 minutes. Worth it to meet the SoCal people!:D

I didn't think that the traffic was bad either time we did did that climb (once in March and once during the event in May) and it's one of my favorites. It's a lot of climbing, what are your time constraints?

Thanks for the replies. As for time constraints, it depends on how far I have to drive. Starting near Redlands gives me an extra two hours versus driving to Ontario/Upland. I could probably slip away for 4-5 hours without a problem. I guess the only issue is that the weather might be iffy in late November- can I expect snow at a certain level by Thanksgiving or is it different every year?
The ride from Mill Creek Ranger Station to Onyx Summit looks like one of SoCal's epic climbs! Am I right? If so, it is definitely something I would like to try. Anyone else interested? How about the day after Thanksgiving (Friday) while all the suckers are shopping?
The big group ride to Baldy sounds fun, but it looks like an all-day affair. I may as well ride on 38 since it is so close and apparently fairly friendly to cyclists.

It's different every year, but the last few winters have been pretty dry, and from what I've heard we're in for another dry one. Which really sucks, 'cause I'm itchin' to do some back-country boarding in the San Gorgonio wilderness. Haven't had the conditions for it the past couple of years :(

It's definitely a good climb. I'd plan on it taking pretty close to that 4 -5 hours. Maybe a little less starting from the Mill Creek Range Station. That's based on the last time I climbed it, and was pushing what was, for me, a pretty hard pace. Took me 3 hours to the summit from my house near downtown Redlands.
Keep in mind you'll need to carry all your food, as the store at Angelus Oaks is no longer open. Water shouldn't be a problem.
Little too soon to say what I've got going on that day, but I'll most likely be on a bike. Whether or not a road or mtn. bike, and where, remains to be seen. If you're still considering going that route when the date gets closer PM me, and I might come along for the ride.

Out of curiosity, what's up with the Angelus Oaks store?
Nevermind...Le Google to the rescue!

Yeah. The whole situation kinda sucks.
Sounds like the new owner was trying to run them out so he could take over. I've heard rumours of an UltraMar or something like that being put in.
Even if they do reopen, I'm not sure that I'll stop there. It's not that hard to carry a bit of extra food, and fill up with water from the fountain...
