Since so many bicyclists would use a decent folding bike if it fit in
an airline legal sized suitcase (62" girth and <50lbs). Here is my
question. Why doesn't some company not try to get the smallest size
for the vertical dimension of a suitcase but use the diagonal distance
which is inches longer? In other words design the frame so that when
folded it is possible to take advantage of the diagonal inside
dimension? Is there any decent 16" folders that have a good range of gears ie at least a 30" low and at least 90" high?

Modified Bromptons can go from high 20s to low 100s with a variable combination of Rohloff, Dual drives, double front chainrings or even the Shlumpf depending on your budget in goal.

Best thing is that they fit into the suitcase without any disassembly. I'm on my way to New Orleans tomorrow but my bike will be functional 'til the time to go to the airport. That might not be important for some people, but it is vital for me. :)

I would expect that the Downtube mini would have gearing that falls within, or close to, your gear inch request. The 2008 derailleur version shows 8-26 cassette and 48-tooth chainring on 16" wheels.

Perhaps Yan or some of the forum's DT owners can comment.

Dahon's Curve SL (SA 5-speed) doesn't quite match your requirements at 38 to 85".
