Fifty Plus (50+) - New rider

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hey folks. Another rider for this forum. I've been an injury free runner and decided to take up cycling in lieu of running. In other words I'd like to stay injury free. The last road bike I owned was in college ---- a Schwinn Varsity, nothing like my current cycle. I'll have lots of questions along the way and I hope you guys don't mind answering them. My bike should be road ready next week. Best regards.

Welcome aboard. I "think" my neighblor put out a Schwinn Varsity for the garbage truck, and I didn't see it before another guy snagged it. Nothing like cruisin' around the neighborhood on a classic.
Welcome Sprocket. You're in the right place to ask questions as there is a great deal of experience here.

Yea - and you might even find that some of that experience has to do with bicycles.:D

You can ask all you want, but the answer is always going to be...the best color for a bike is white. :D

I had a Varisty, too. Bought it used in 1972. Rode it until 1996. Sold it in a garage sale for $5. No brakes, no tires. Saddle thrashed. Funky hand-done paint job. A tank. I loved it.
Welcome, and as you can see, the knowledge you find here...sometimes should stay here...
peace
The current cycle is a 1991 12 spd Nishiki Modulus, CrMo frame, 64cm, Engage components,Shimano shifters, Biopace rings and Look ARC carbon pedals. It had been hanging in storage for several years. Its getting a good going over. New rubber, saddle, cleaning and a through service. The previous owner used it as a triathalon cycle. Its white with multi color accents. I'll post a pic tonight ------. S

SDon't bother- We have enough pics of white bikes. Now if the multi coloured bits are the various Pies taken enroute, then we want all the glorious details.

If you're doing all that work on your bike, don't you think it deserves a nice new paint job? Maybe blue or red or something?

Welcome Sproket!! I really miss my old Varsity. Bought it new in '72 and
we finally parted ways in '96. I miss it so much that I actually went used
bike shopping last winter and ended up with an '86 Raleigh Marathon. A
better bike for sure but sharing many of the same riding characteristics
as the old Varsity.

I'm new here also and I'm also taking up cycling because I also have knees that need a much easier and much kinder sport. Too many football and inline skating knee injuries that are beginning to remind me when it's going to rain.
I also had a Varsity which my mother recently said she gave to a kid in the neighborhood. It actually rode pretty well but it was just heavy as hell.
My beautiful new RED Specialized Tarmac will be on it's way soon; I can't wait. Even though I'm new also I'll say welcome and I know you'll receive some outstanding advice from these folks, they've been very helpful to me in my short time here.

She's beautiful, and long-legged! You might want to put the chain back on the chainring [I noticed the derailleur looked a bit odd facing backwards].
Welcome to the club.

Whew!!! That bike looks more like "blue with white highlights." There's some hope for it yet.
Too bad about not having any yellow on it, though.
Welcome, Sprocket! Blue is the color, though....
Thanks for all the comments. I'm psyched about the first ride too. I've hooked up with some cyclists at work who are willing to let me ride along with their group ------ that is without eating all of their road dust. You've heard it before ----- the old proverbial respect for our elders line!! Spkt
