I went bike shopping today. my cousin "surpised" me by taking me bike shopping. She took the big minivan when she didnt have to, that was a real shocker there.

The first 2 stores were boring as hell. All they had were treks and some no name brands. Boring. Nothing of interest. The 3rd store had some Konas. Mostly 2003-2002 stuff. Nothing 2004. They had the 2003 Caldera. I rode that and it felt pretty good but it was not my size. I never rode a bike with front suspension so it felt werid when i pedeled, i went down on the fork. I guess its needs to be adjusted.

Visited 2 more stores and nothing there but some Treks and Santa Cruz bikes. I saw the Blur and pissed my pants. It had only been something ive seen in the magazines, but now it was in front of my eyes. It was beautful. I had to take it out for a spin. It was soooo smooth. Suspension was fantastic, gear shifting was a piece of cake. It was awesome, except for the price. For 3500, i could buy so much more, but it would be worth it.

The final store had a buttload of Specialized bikes for me to try out. I had tried out a 2001 Stumpjumper Comp, 2002 Rockhopper Comp and a 2003 Hard Rock. Out of them all i enjoyed the stumpy. The shifting was smooth, suspension was good. but of all of them, they felt light. I mean, compared to my old rigid, it felt so light and so fragile. Im not sure if its just me. but i guess its like that for all the new bikes.

I didnt get any new bike today b/c i still didn try out the Kona Hoss/Delux or the 2003 Caldera/Luna. I really want the Kona Hoss b/c of the price and the components that come with it. The 2001 Stumpy was almost 800 bucks, a 2003 is that same price, it wasnt worth it. I called every single Kona retailer near me and not one store had a Hoss. SO i guess im gonna have to wait on that new bike.

see if you can ge tthe 2001 stumpjumper for cheaper. Its a really good bike. They will probably want to get rid of it cuz its a 2001 model so bargain with them

it was nice ride indeed. but i still want to try out the kona hoss before i make an decision. for the price of the hoss, its the best bang for the buck ive seen.

WHat were the noname brand bikes, sometimes they are better than you might think.Back when i bought my first mtb a shop carried only kona and jamis. At the time i knew nothing of either and wouldn't even look at them.Later i learned more and i love both brands.
Btw killerasp i'm originally from syracuse. Was there a year ago and rode the old quarry trails and had a blast.Plus the trails were in my grandmothers backyard.

Curious, what is wrong with buying a Trek? They have alot of speciality bikes for all kinds of riding? Too corporate?

Transparent, I've been riding a '03 Hardrock Pro...very happy with the bike. I use it for Mtn and Road...It's a good all around bike. I looked at quite a few bikes and it seemed like a good bang for my buck.

After trying the stumpy and the rockhopper, i asked to try the hardrock. he looked at me for a second and said that shouldnt, it isnt as good as good as the stumpy and the rockhopper. i told him i just watned to try it.

Well, first off i noticed that the chain was making alot of noise while shifting. and the shifting was not smooth. i guess it was because of the compenents that came with the hard drock. the suspension was decent for a judy TT. But the foxes felt much better.

It was a good bike, but after riding the stumpy and the rockhopper, it was not better than those two in terms of compoents. the frame was sturdy and not too heavy.

i totally agree, once you ride a bike the next level up, you almost can't justify spending money on an inferior product.

Echoing what SinGate said... did you give the Treks a try? They do have some nice upper end front suspesion bikes. Also, have a look at Giant... Ive got a 2002 XTC SE-1 and love it. For under $2000 you get a mix of XTR and XT, Mavic Cross-Max wheel set, a feather light aluminum frame and Rock Shox SID fork. The bike handles and climbs better than any I have owned so far... including my Fisher Supercaliber.

Dont get too hung up on brands... they all make some nice rides if you look.

Good luck!
