Second season for me (ACME jersey) I've been dying to get stuck back in since the last race of '10!

First race of the series at Riverside State park. Finished mid pack in the 40-49 group.

Muddy Wheels at Dieppe, NB, Canada. It was my first race ever on a bicycle - finished first in "C" category (first timers Cat)

Gorgeous night - 22-23 degrees. Great mixture of slow, tight, technical terrain with some flat out gravel track. Nasty hill with a barrier that forced a foot climb - ouch.

What's up with the crowd at that race? I woman just rides buy dressed up as a bumble bee and they all look bored to death. Were the other riders' costumes so much better that yours was considered mundane?

Agreed.

Unfortunately, there was a pretty poor costume turnout at the race I did. I was expecting to have a relatively lame costume, but like 90% of the people there raced in their usual kit.

I'm still having nightmares about that run up...

Yeah, memories of that run up have me choosing Apple Core Cross over Edgefield this Saturday. I need something flat.

A short steep run-up like you get at Barton is more fun -- steep enough that you definitely have to run it, but short enough that you dig in and sprint up the hill.

Here are some shots from a race a week ago, Syracross at Highland Forest just outside of Syracuse, NY. It was probably about 32* out and snow was still on the ground, not cold enough to freeze the mud though and there was plenty of it.

They had probably seen this and expected more than just a bumble bee.

It wouldn't surprise me at all. We just had a 12-year old get a mandatory upgrade from Beginner to C after his fourth podium finish.

The mixing of juniors and adults makes for some fun pictures. This is my personal favorite, from Alpenrose in 2009:

That is 1st, 2nd, 3rd in the single speed race behind the kid. Obviously they were lapping him, but they had such a big gap on everyone else that they let him lead out through the finish straight, not slowly either, the kid charged it. Everyone got a kick out of it, pretty cool.

Started my day by going over the bars on my pre-lap (stupid sand pit!) and getting my face bandaged up 5 minutes before staging.

down a steep rutted root section on the backside of the course.
this was a really hard race for me. not sure why but there were 2 steep sections, one was definitley a grassy run up and another almost run up section in the woods that was rideable if you took the right line and there wasnt any traffic in front of you with a gnarly soft dirt 180 downhill turn. meh i was 26 out of 27, my worst result all season. but still a fun end to my cross season up here!

By the u19 race (also the masters), the two wooded sections were complete mud. i had to run up them, which caused my cleats to get clogged up with mud. Then after the run up, there was a really steep grassy section, so there wasn't time to bang out the mud from your cleats. I ended up finishing dead last in the Masters/ Elite U19 Catagory :(, but it still was a lot of fun!

Me and my season-long race rival both ran helmet cams. This is just the first lap. (I'm the one with the pink tires.)
Sorry for the wonky angle on Ken's cam. I didn't aim things right when I mounted his camera. It was a last minute thing; I planned on having more time, but I took a spill in the sand on my pre-laps, fell weird and cut my face and had to go to the med tent for a quick bandage job 10 minutes before staging! Time I planned on using to set the cameras properly.
