Bicycle Mechanics - I think I can do this.

Ok, well I have an old bike that I am completely rebuilding. It is a flat bar and I am pretty sure that I can convert it to a drop. It uses the type of shifters shown here: Trigger Shifter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Three_speed_shifter.JPG) and the basic brake levers that are bolted onto the handle bars. I plan on buying these drop down bars: Handlebars (http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=24737&subcategory_ID=5255) Now, my question is, could I just mount the break/shifting components onto those bars? I have enough cable on the bike for it to reach. Would there be any problems with this?

Do you have a picture of the brake lever assembly? Usually flat bar mounted brake levers bands have a different Inner diameter than bands for a drop bar.

Oh, and the pics are NOT of the actual bike. But, those breaks are exactly it.

The shifter might work as older components used material which are pliable and can be made to fir the bars. Your only problem might be some surface scratching on the bars as you work them up. The brake levers will not work as they are meant for Mountain bike bars(different diameter than Road bars). If you want to run brake levers similar to those look into getting cyclo-cross levers (cross top levers) or a set of road brake levers.

It'll probably work but it'll take a little creativity. I did a similar project around 40 years ago.

I installed the flat bar brake levers horizontally on the top flat part of the handlebar. I don't remember where I installed the Sturmey Archer trigger shifter. It all worked OK.

I wouldn't spend $35.00 on a handlebar for a project like this. If you're really intent on going through with this, PM me and I'll ship you a handlebar.

How much would you want for the handlebars?

The bars you linked to have a 31.8 clamp diameter. How do you intend to mount them in an older stem with a smaller clamp diameter?
