agreed, go with a set of mechanical discs from Avid. Many actually like them better than hydraulic brake sets.

I am one of those. I hang out in a bike shop, and ride death marches with the crew, and
a lot of people have hydraulic brakes and I know I am not missing a damn thing with
my mechanical, cable-actuated avids.

you set them and forget them, and crank the simple pad adjusters after riding in a lot of crud
to take care of pad wear. the only thing hydros give you, is automatic pad wear compensation.
(that and pinkie finger full lockup but if you want that action you wouldn't be considering v's)
with avids you hand crank the red dials once in a while, 1 or 2 clicks. if you keep the disc
clean that will be like once every 2 months

I agree about V-brakes having their downfalls. Living in an almost arctic climate, I know it takes about 10 seconds of riding through snow to render rim brakes useless.

I don't have brakes. Only panty waist sissy boys would even consider using such pointless equipment.

Yeah, the point is to go, not stop. When you're done with the ride just put a foot down.

1970 = v brakes

Incorrect. I didn't see V brakes on MTBs until after I owned my first bike, that was in the early 1990's. Those cantilever brakes from earlier years where not V brakes.

fortunately i have my discs, got it as it was included in my set-up, just a hard tail of course so that i can pitch in on some important parts of the bike...

For me I race wit Vs. I dont see the need to add another pound to my bike just to stop it. Using a good set of Koolstop pads and ceramic rims, I never had felt the need for anything more.

I raced a very muddy race this summer and a number of guys with disc brakes had brake failure due to mud clogging up the internals. I had Vs and never had an issue.

Go with whatever you like, but I still think Vs have advantage of being lower weight and much less maintenance.

go for hydraulic disc brakes cuz when your going fast they stop right away.
