Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - busted my park chain whip

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I didn't thingk it could happen, I was changing the gears on a Surly the other day, and couldn't budge the 17t cog, so I laid into it, and the damn bolt that holds the chain on the handle busted. I found the nut, but not the rest of the bolt another reason to wear safety glasses. That would have been a story.

you twisted the WRONG way!!!!!!!!
Dunno if Park does their warranty the same as Crapsman and Scrap-On ... can you take it into a shop and have them warranty it?

We broke them all the time in the six speed and freewheel days. Just get a new little bolt and stick it back together.
You have to figure a chain brakes now and then so why not a chain whip it only seems logical. Nothing lasts forever.

I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but the chainwhip that I have doesn't seem to fit onto a cog normally?? I set it on the teeth, but when I wrap it around it gets too tight like it won't fit. I know normal chains fit around the cog, and this thing looks like a normal chain, but.... Is that supposed to be like that??

....maybe you're trying to wrap a 3/32" chain around an 1/8" cog?? What kind of a chain whip you do have?

I always make myself my chainwips. It cost me nada and if it breaks, I don't cry. A Park tool wip is a rip off. Now, just keep that chainwip and fix a piece of chain to the handle...
