HEY!
I have been working on my modest budget and my perl izumi $45 pair is just fine (granted this is my frist pair ever). They suit my just fine, i like them a lot.

theres lots of good bike shorts out there under $50 I have never paid more than that for shorts look for slaes and check out places like overstock.com and the rest of the online bike sites. As my grandad used to say all the time"never pay retail"

Crap, I buy all my cycle clothes at the thrift store. Anything more than 4$ for shorts and 8$ for tights is ridiciulous, IMHO. There's plenty of people who buy brand new cycling gear, perhaps in hope the expenditure will spur them to actually exersize, never wear said gear, and donate it to charity a couple of years later.

We must have to many people here that use them I have never had any real luck finding bike stuff at thrift stores in my area, every oince in a while something appears but not often

I find the Performance Elite shorts are just fine for the everyday longer ride. They are often on sale for $30-40. For the simple 35 mile ride, I find the cheapo Performance or Nashbar Gel/hydro shorts do the trick. For longer rides, I have found a pair of PI's and Garneau elite shorts on sale for under $65.
For long ordous rides, don't go cheap. The comfort of your rear is worth it, when you do a hundred mile plus ride. You want no excuses to find a century, something you will want to avoid in the future..

It may be fine if washed and laundered correctly but I'd still feel squeamish about the possibility of wearing used riding shorts. :eek:

Certainly we have all noticed that bike shorts need to be properly cared for so that all kinds of hideous bacteria don't grow in them. In the end (PUN INTENDED) I would rather that bacteria, if it exists, to be entirely from MY OWN ass as opposed to someone elses. ;)

I look for sales at online stores and check REI if you have one around your area they have a member only garage sale thats what they call it where you can get damaged and returned goods for some good deals. I got a pair of Pearl Izumi shorts real cheap they had a flaw in the stiching no big deal saved over $40. Didn't even look used so I took them home and gave them a good wash :)

50 bucks for shorts?? you must be rich..
I always get brand new shorts. I can get mine at my LBS @ $15 to $20 US, depending on the design and make...
I can get a complete set, jersey+shorts+bandana for $30-$35 US.

About half of the stuff I find appears to never have been worn or used. I found a pair of Pearl Izumi bib tights with the tags still on in the last month, and a pair of Shimano SPD shoes yesterday that appear to have never been worn or worn very minimally. I think the real riders tend to wear their short out to the point they're junk.

Ntgateguy.. Some cycling shorts makers conform to US and other European sizing. Seems Garneau and PI conform to European sizing.
Those Europeans must not indulge in our donut/car culture. Seems their extra larage sizes are equivilant to our size 36. Size 36 = extra large. wow! That would be a healthy culture. In fact in Europe large cyclists would have to ride naked, as "Troll" would like. In Europe it is difficult to find shorts larger than the US equivilant of 36.
Not so good should it need to cultivate US football players, however.

The Pearl Izumi Attack shorts I have (under $65) work just fine.
The Pearl Izumi 3D Microsensor Bibs $135 work fine.
I tried on one of those $215 bibs from Asso, man were they nice.
It's all about your budget.
If $5 shorts work for you fine. If you can afford $215 bibs and they work you fine.
Last month I spent $125 on a fry pan. What???
