See & Be Seen safety campaign brightens Portland roads

*****
Join us downtown for the 2007 Bike Light Parade on Thursday, November 15 at 6:00 pm.

We'll meet at SW Park & Burnside (click here for map (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=800+w+burnside,+97205&sll=45.523743,-122.678511&sspn=0.00678,0.014462&ie=UTF8&om=1&ll=45.522811,-122.678624&spn=0.001665,0.003471&z=18&iwloc=addr)) and enjoy an escorted ride down Broadway - fully lit, of course!

This fall & winter Commissioner Sam Adams and the Portland Office of Transportation again team up with community partners to encourage cyclists to use lights and to remind motorists to watch for bikes. The campaign includes ads on TriMet buses, shelters, and benches. Ads will display from December 2007 through January 2008.

Public awareness events such as the See & Be Seen Bike Light Parade help publicize the message.
(For more information on last year's Parade, read this story (http://www.commissionersam.com/node/1749) from Commissioner Sam's blog .)

Local bicycle retailers have partnered with PDOT to encourage cyclists to get lit, by offering discounts on lighting and reflective gear. A coupon will be available at the Bike Light Parade, and on this site soon.

The Community Cycling Center will complement the See & Be Seen campaign with its Get Lit! program , providing free lights to needy cyclists.
But feel free to start the holiday season early yourself - buy extra lights and give them to your friends and family who ride!

We thank our community partners Lamar Advertising, the Portland Mercury, BikePortland.org, the Community Cycling Center, and NW Natural for helping to get the word out!

For more information about the See & Be Seen campaign contact Timo Forsberg at 503-823-7699 or timothy.forsberg@pdxtrans.org.

After the parade, BikeCraft III (http://bikeportland.org/bikecraft) will be at the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby. Beer! We should all go. :)

This was an interesting evening. I was a little disappointed that Sam Adams was not able to attend as planned. Some of the illumination on the bikes was amazing!

Bike Craft would have been more fun with either fewer people or a larger venue, but there was some really cool stuff there.

Any idea what the attendance was? I'm no good at guessing numbers for something like that.

No, but this is the second BikeCraft I've been to. Both were packed to the gills, and this year's was a larger venue than the last. The beer helped. :)

I bought a wonderful pair of "quick-release mittens" from Natalie Ramsland. Jonathan Maus took some nice pictures (http://www.flickr.com/photos/bikeportland/sets/72157603211483425/).
