Like any hot rodder, I'm happy to add speed equipment to my ride. This weekend, I just added toe clips to my commuter bike. The speed increase was immediate. Now that my feet don't slide off the pedals I can pedal at higher rpm, and when my feet lift off the pedals, the toe clips trap them converting the energy into extra speed down the road and more power up the hills. :D

Next step is to arrange for a slight twist of your foot to allow you to get out of the toe clip quickly. Perhaps you could make some sort of device to hook or unhook your shoe from the toe clip.

Good wheels and hubs will give you the most bang for the buck. Then ceramic bearings in the BB and pulleys. Oh, while your at it just upgrade the hubs with ceramic bearing too. You will have time to ride between jobs trying to pay for all of this.

Best increase in speed (After better hand built wheels) is in tyres. There are plenty of Tyres out there and plenty of people using one or the other but a change to a narrower tyre and a lighter construction- will improve anyones speed. Now as to comfort or reliability- That is down to the rider.

CF handlebars will give you lots more speed. Can't remember if that is Crank Forward or Carbon Fiber. Forget it! Ti bars.

I have found only two things guaranteed to make you faster on a bike:

1) a tailwind

2) downhill.

In my case - I think it's down for a new engine, I've tried every thing else...

Hard soled road shoes. The difference between MTB shoes and road is detectable. I have a pair that work with the clips and straps [for my Paramount] so they are not an excuse.
Areobars can also help your overall speed, but I mostly use them into headwinds and to take the weight off my hands.
