Hi,

I have a friend who is looking to buy an older Dahon with Sram DualDrive hub and upgrade it.
Does anyone know if it possible to upgrade the 7-speed hub to fit a 8/9/10-speed Sram/Shimano cassette (perhaps by changing freehub body)?

just replace the freehub body and axle (the come as a unit) with the 9 spd model

or you could just run 8 cogs of a 9 spd cassette on the old 7 spd freehub

Is that just the freehub body and axle, or the complete internals?

I don't believe that there is any alternative freehub body and axle that will work for the 3x7 hub. Does he have the 3x7 or the 7sp DualDrive (they are different beasts)?

The 3x7 hub does not use a Shimano freehub body, it has it's own unique thing.

I'd just do the 8 of 9 trick. You'll get reduced wheel dish and won't have to change anything but the rear cogs and the right shifter.

Hi,
I was actually able to get a different casette lockring (that's probably the wrong name for it. You know, the thing that keeps your casette attached?) which allowed me to use an 8 speed casette on my SRAM 3x7 dual drive. The only problem is I don't think they are made anymore. I got mine form PBW bikes. It's worth a shot and requires nothing more than a little redishing to get a proper 8 gears on there,
Juan

I believe that it is the 3x7 hub.
We are considering lacing a new wheel with a Nexus redband/Alfine and running a 2/3 chainring up front, may be an easier setup.

Josh -- What is your final goal here? What gear range and steps are you looking for?

the 8 of 9 trick is really easy.
