Long Distance Competition/Ultracycling, Randonneuring and Endurance Cycling - Long Distance Cycling with 3-speeds?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Just wanted to know if someone every tried it (Like PBP with Raleigh, Rudge etc.)
Joel Metz rode the 2003 PBP on his Sturmey 3sp messenger bike (custom frame though). I did the same ride on a 1965 Moulton fitted with a Duomatic (2 speed). An Italian (can't remember name) did the 1400km 2001 London-Edinburgh-London on a 3sp Brompton. Drew Buck did the 1999 PBP on a 1903 Dursley Pederson with a Pederson 3 sp hub. AFAIR there was somebody who tried to ride the 1991 and 1995 PBPs on the sort of machine you are thinking of. He definitely DNFed in '91 but I don't know about '95.

My first long-distance ride was on a Sturmey-Archer top-tube mounted AMF 3-speed, complete with black and white vinyl saddle bag with crescent wrench and patch kit. I rode over one of the hilliest sections of the Bicycle Across Missouri route in August of 1967. 52 miles in 4.5 hours. Must have been good training.......
