put (or let someone else put) an extra bearing on one side of the hub!!


and then only realize it when you go to overhaul the hub cause it just doesn't seem smooth like it should be.

I mean it still works and is relatively smooth compared to hubs I overhaul at the local bike kitchen, but damn...the difference between the two sides was crazy...the one with the extra bearing had scratched up bearing race and cone race, while the other side was the most precise and beautifully machined thing I've seen on a bicycle ever

You can fit replacement cups, although they can be a bit rare.

Why?

Because the extra ball took up the space that normally allows the balls to rotate freely, making them seize up and scratch the races.

Can you polish the scratches out? Long ago I remember reading a recommendation to polish new hub racings by packing the hubs with some type of metal polish (started with the letter S, need help here guys), hooking up a drill to the axle with a piece of tubing and spinning the axle. After that you clean the races and rebuild the hubs with new bearings and fresh grease. Is it worth a try on the bad side?

I'm not sure what ranman is talking about, but valve lapping compound should be abrasive enough. You can pick it up at any auto store

Flitz would be a good polish to try. I think most valve compounds will be to coarse(I use Clover fine and it is pretty gritty for doing a race).

You can get clover compound up to 2000 grit,that's more than fine enough for that.You'll need to go to a machining supply to get the finer compounds.Regular "fine" compound,that you would find at automotive chain stores is only 280/320 grit.
