Southern California - Pictures from Death Valley (A lot of 'em)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Here's some pictures I snapped while riding through Death Valley last weekend. Death Valley is one of the few places I can justify paying for a supported ride... you're pretty much SOL out there if anything happens. Everyone who makes this ride happen is great.

The pictures are fantastic! How was the ride? Riding Death Valley sounds interesting but something that I'm not ready for. Weather conditions? Time?

Beautiful pictures, thanks for sharing. How were the winds? I rode the southern route in March and they were not pleasant at all.

I was there in March also, I know what you're talking about, that headwind was brutal. I remember getting to the 50 mile turnaround at the top of the climb in 2.5 hours. The next 50 took me almost 5 hours, if that gives you any indication of the wind. I'm much more fit now, but it still would have sucked. There was a 15 mile stretch with some winds this time, but nothing too bad.
ClanLee, the ride was beautiful and the weather was actualy cool (maybe even more chilly than I would have liked) The sun stayed behind the clouds most of the day... probably in the 70's? My total time was 13.5 hours, but as you can tell, I was in no hurry... I would much rather enjoy myself, take pictures and have a good time on my bike.

jsigone: It is, hands down, one of the most enjoyable beautiful places to ride. No stop signs, no traffic, no sound... if you don't go in the middle of the summer, it's amazing.

I concur. Even with the poor visibility this weekend, it was spectacular. I'm anxious to go back during some clear skies.

Next time you're there, be sure and ride the Artist's Drive and also up to Dante's View! Great stuff!

I was there in March, despite the brutal winds it was a beautiful ride, well supported and many nice and friendly people, one of the most enjoyable rides I have ever done.

Yeah, pretty incredible. No stop lights for miles and miles and miles....
That route is familiar for some reason... oh yeah! I did that at the end of 2005.
Did you head up to Hell's Gate before returning to Furnace Creek?
Beautiful pictures!

Yep, it was a fun climb and a great descent. I'd love to do it again, if the timing is right.

It is incredible even in the summer. The wife and I helped put on a night ride on August 18th. Freeking eerie lighting effects as the Moon came up. Horrible winds from the south. The crew had to sag out half the riders on what was basically a flattish ride from Furnace Creek along the East side road to the base of the climb up Strawberry Pass.
