Just wondering if anyone's doing it and has anyone had any experience swimming in the bay water? Is it difficult with the currents? What should I expect? This would be my first ocean race, any insight would be great.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Hey, man. I'm doing the Sprint on sunday, provided the oil spill gets cleaned up and the Coasties give Tri-California the go-ahead.

If you haven't swam in the Bay yet, go get in the water ASAP. I trust you have a wetsuit--if not, count on a longer warmup/acclimatization period before the race. Given the location of the swim, currents shouldn't be much of an issue.

And if you haven't ridden the course yet, know that the roads around Treasure Island are lumpy at best. There are some potholes and hazards that will mess with your pace if you're not careful--one or two will launch you like a BMX newbie if you don't see them in time. Beware.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Yeah, it's just not going to happen. Tri-Cal Events cancelled the swim leg of the race and will carry on with an impromptu Duathlon for the event.

I realize there's nothing Tri-Cal Events can do about an oil spill like this, but it's a real bummer that this race (the last race of the season for a lot of people) has to end like this.

Well, I wish I had seen this before the Sprint. I new sort of generically the road was bad in places, but during the heat of the first lap (just beginning the second lap) I hit what would have been a speed bump had it been an official CalTrans speed bump, but it wasn't marked all that well. There already was a guy down on the left side of the road, but I didn't see him until after. I went over the handle bars and landed on my good side (my right side) (I had two reconstructive knee operations on my left knee last year) and ended hitting my helmet on the ground (thanks) and got a huge road rash on my right hip and crunched my shoulder pretty good. Some dickhead in the apartment complex was laughing out his window and just as I was standing there trying to get my chain on, a third guy did the same thing, ate it, cracked his helmet and slammed into me. Neither of the other guys ended up continuing.

Me, I HTFU and finished. Didn't hurt too bad until the next day. Still not sure I didn't do bad damage to my shoulder.

Next time, I may skip this race. The crit-type nature of the bike with the bad roads (and the wet conditions this year) make this probably not the right race for me. I was glad I finished though.
