Ridding one of the local trails I decided to go off the path where there is a patch of shredded wood, some how I managed to snap my rd completely in half and break a spoke and hopefully I didn’t bend the rd hanger all this caused my rear wheel to lock up. Good news is I didn’t go down or I would be picking splinters out of me. Man this will be the second rd I have busted this year just replaced it in March. Sorry no pictures but the bike shop was in between the trail and my apartment. So I dropped it off on my walk of shame home. Just had to rant.

I feel your pain. I bent the XT rear derailleur on my cx bike earlier this year (the actual derailleur, not the hanger). After managing to bend it back into shape it held up for a few more weeks but then exploded in the middle of a sprint out from between a street car and a cab. The streetcar driver actually stopped, got out and let me know which way he saw pieces fly in case I wanted to go back for them (no, but thanks).

Not sure, the part with the spring and screw adjustments is still connected to the hanger, but the cage and jockey wheels are next to the crank now just hanging off by the chain.

Thanks for reminding me why I carry a chain tool around most of the time. Mechanicas are always a bummer.

So if I had one could I made a temp single speed, taking off the rd and making the chain shorter? At least to get me home, I was thinking about that.

Yep, that's the idea. Might not be too exact if you have vertical dropouts, but it'll get you home.

Where did you crash? When I lived in Houston I rode the hell out of the ant hills on my cx bike loooong before there were many around. I'd have guys on mountain bikes look at me like I was crazy when I passed them.

Allen parkway trail forget the actual trail name, I was off the trail running through some mulch that they recently put down to fill up some tire ruts and holes. In-between Taft St and Sabine St. on the Allen Parkway side. Have really no idea what caused it, just that the back wheel locked up whatever got hung in there was gone, looked around for something that would be strong enough to break it, nothing that stood out, just mulch and shredded wood.
It's weird the past year since owning a cross bike I have been on the look out for other cross riders I have seen maybe 5 in the past year/4,500 miles on the bike. Some guy on a mtb announced "roadie on trail" at the mtb trail at the Memorial Park at me which I thought that was pretty funny. Some of the roadies I have talked to seem to not have a clue what a cyclocross is, I usually get "You mean a hybrid", but I assure my bike that she is not a hybrid and they are just ignorant.:D

I stilll get that kind of look. I got it in Portland where cross is huge. I get it here, where there is a small but edicated scene. Thing is while the number of cross bikes is increasing, a lot of people don't really ride them off road. They use them as commuters, winter training bikes (on road) etctera. The average mountain biker who doesn't road ride is just going to look at a 'cross bike and think "road bike."

Me I take my 'cross bike on every local mountain bike trail I can get away with (and some I can't). I did once get an uphill guy waving on when I was going downhill through a moderate roack garden, even though standard ettiquete dicates that I yield, which I wa sinitialy doing. "You go, you've got the skinny tires," he said.

I'm not really out to impress anyone by being nutso or hardcore or something, my technical skills leave a lot to be desired, but I have to admit it is kind of fun being the "anti-squishy." :D

Here are the photos of old and new, shop still had the busted one. New hanger, New RD, 12 new spokes, new cassette, new chain. Ouch I will be eating plenty of ramen noodles for the next couple of weeks I wasn't expecting this. I had been looking into putting a larger cassette and RD to do some light touring early next year this just expedited that decision. So far I really like the feel of the xt maybe even better than the ultegra or maybe it's going from a short cage to a long cage.

bummer about the derailleur. My educated (very) guess is that you got a stick between the wheel and the derailleur. A spoke leveraged the stick up against the derailleur and sheared it off. No engineering back there for that kind of stress...sticks are lots worse than snakes. I have a whole box of broken derailleurs from my shameful past.

Could be worse, though. You could be spending your money on beer or something useless like that.
