I'm putting togther a 5-day tour for this fall, and I'll be ending up in Frenchtown at the end of day three. At that point, I have two days to get home (Edison). I'm thinking that heading to round State reservoir would be a nice, scenic ride.

I've plotted the first 20 miles of day 4; has anyone biked in this area? Do these roads look safe?

Thanks!

I've cycled in the vicinity of the roads you've picked, though I'm not sure how much of that precise route I've ridden. Anyway, Hunterdon County (where Frenchtown and Round Valley Reservoir are located) is an excellent location for cycling. If you just stay off the main highways (such as Route 22), you should be very happy with your selection. My wife and I sometimes drive up there, park our car, unload our bikes, and just choose roads from the county map. We've never been disappointed, though a few unpaved roads were rough on our road bikes. If your bike is suitable for the occasional gravel roads, then you can hardly go wrong in that area.

Oh my, frenchtown... I used to ride down there from my place in PA this past summer. The area is fantastic for cycling and your route looks good. As Ken said, just stay off the main roads. If you follow river road along the Delaware (29, 619, 627), you'll see tons of cyclists on the weekends.

NJ Bike Map is a great reference for planning:

If you feel up for a challenge, I know of a 19% grade hill right across the river on the PA side.

I always NJ Bike Map confusing, although it certainly looks like an incredible resource. Has anyone done an NJ Bike Map/Google Maps mashup? Now, that would be useful.

Must start thinking about the way back. I think this will be the next half a day:

I figure I'll wake up in Frenchtown, hit the road, and stop at the Round State Reservoir, I've wanted to see that for some time. Then northeast about 20 miles to...somewhere. Need to research an area that's both interesting and has a cheap hotel or a hostel.

Next day, I'm hoping for a route homewards that's around 35 miles, for a cooldown day. If I have time, I may go to the site my company is moving a lot of people to (Summit) and see how bike-friendly the area is. And I'll have to see how tired I am. Does anyone ever get Sick. Of. The. Damn. Bike. Already. on tour?
