I haven't been following the world cup, lately. What's left on the calendar? Can Zabel catch up?

Paris Tours and Tour of Lombardy are the last 2 events on the World Cup calendar. These races take place before and after the World Championships in October. It seems unlikely that anyone will catch Bettini as Michael Boogerd is his closest competitor, 146 points behind.

As far as the overall UCI rankings go, Zabel does have a chance, albeit a small one, to overtake Bettini as the World's number 1 ranked rider. If Zabel racks up some wins in the Vuelta and Bettini becomes dormant (not very likely) then he can catch him. However, Bettini is aiming for the Worlds along with an impending World Cup overall repeat and should only increase his margin over the field. Any changes in the rankings will be small moves in placings aside from Aitor Gonzalez who stands to see a considerable drop if he can't achieve his winning form at the Vuelta.

Bettini is looking so strong right now that short of a disaster, I can't see him losing the WC.

Laggard:

3 World Cup victories for Bettini and he was injured during his race: Liege-Bastogne-Liege. I couldn't agree with you more.
