Mountain Biking - What is a good anti thorn combination?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I tried the slime filled tube and it isen't working for me as I have gone through 2 of those in a short time.

Simple, you can do one of 3 things.

1)Suck it up and take a couple of spare tubes with you, and some patches.
2)Suck it up and not worry about flatting.
3)Keep the bike in the garage, collecting dust.

Or if you are too lazy to do any of those three.

Tufo liners do a decent job.

Talk about thorns. My legs got all scratched up today plowing a new path near were I live. I suggest Mr Tuffies strips if you dont mind implants in your tires.

Not true.

Depends on the size of the puncture. Any sealant is only good to a certain sized puncture. If the puncture is more of a tear, you're screwed. Also no tire is puncture proof, except for those solid rubber/hard plastic tires.(In which you have to worry about flat spotting the tires.)

Get a set of Specialized Captains with armadillo protection. I ran over thorns and had 5 in each tire and no flats. The only downside is that they are on the heavy side.

Don't listen to this utter nonsense (posted by an admin even)

For frequent thorn punctures, your best bet is to run a tubeless setup with stans sealant.

UST tires on UST rims with sealant would be your most bulletproof setup but you can convert the rims you have and use regular tires also.

My question to you would be what type of rider are you? That would help me recommend an equipment choice for you

That is true, but we are talking about thorns here, which usually produce a small hole in tire and tube.

Also, how is someone running stans more screwed than someone running olivers if they get a tear in the tire that does not seal? Either way, you are going to have to take the tire off and put a tube in there. So your pretty much equally screwed in that case running tubeless or tubed.

Running a tubeless setup does not mean you don't carry a tube anyway for emergencies.

You really can't say it any better. I went from flatting 3 times a week on thorns(sometimes 3 a ride) to no flats in 3 years simply by switching to stan's strips and sealant.

Anything will puncture regardless of setup, stans is good against small punctures, but on larger punctures and tears it's worthless, just like any other sealant. Besides the OP is asking about tubed tire solutions.

Saying tire set up is puncture/flat proof is stupid.

Besides the OP is asking about tubed tire solutions.

The only solution is Stan's, regardless if he is asking for a tube solution. :p

I get so ticked off when folks in my area join us on local rides and I find out they are running tubed tires. We have yet to have one of them not get a flat on a ride.

i guess you could put stans in a tube. might clog up the valve though

i know its not anti thorn but i find the best way is to take 2 extra innertubes and a small pump + some times depending on where im rideing patches incase i get more than 4 punctures

What if you got oversized innertubes cut them along their circumference and tacked them to a new tube (partially inflated) or line the inside of the tires with them and use them as a barrier like Mr Tuffies.

+1 on STANS

You can use your existing rims and tires...just make sure they are compatible. See their website for details:
http://www.notubes.com
Otherwise, your LBS can order it for you/install it for you if you need them to (in many cases its a serious hassle and is totally worth it to have someone do it for you) Using a tubeless tire (even if you're not using a tubeless rim) makes it way easier as well as the bead will lock in place easier.

Another option would be to get heavy duty thorn-resistant tubes and add slime to them (with the green tube). The slime tubes with the sealant inside them already are crap IMO, BUT the sealant DOES WORK well if you add it afterward.
If you do get a flat:
1. remove thorns
2. inflate tire with pump/co2
3. spin the wheel and maybe it will seal up
Downside? It's super-heavy and not for the weight conscious

Sometimes it will and sometimes it won't. Slime is sort of limited and works, but I have seen MIRACLES performed by STANS. I say forget the tuffy-liners and ghetty alternatives...a lot of times they work, but they are a pain to install and often end up pinch flatting or deforming your tires and feel kind of weird, especially when running lower pressures needed for mountain biking.

Im hearing that the slime tends to gather in a clump in one area of the tube causing a weird feeling also in the tire.

What are Stans ?

+ 100 on the Armadillos!! I live in Goat Head Hell (The Midwest) and the 'Dillos on my ride work just fine!

i hate slime .. when you flat with that stuff you get a bunch of goo on your wheel.. I just suck it up and run regular tubes.. I rarely ever flat though.. guess I'm not riding hard enough
