Hi all,
My buddy and I, both recent college grads, have done at least one stupid, stupid roadtrip annually for the last five years; however, this year is different. For whatever reason, surely quixotic, we want to travel by bike. We live in South Jersey and have sights on NV if not CA (just to make it an offical xc trip).

The problem is I don't know the first thing about biking. I've never rode anything but a mountain bike, but I know that's not the answer.

For the past several hours, I've looked for a good deal before remembering I have no idea what I'm looking for. Since I plan on lugging a small backpack, I assume I want either a touring bike or road bike. My budget for the bike is $750. I'd really appreciate some suggestions. What bike will hold up for the ride (I'm 5'9 BTW)?

Then you check out the Touring forum for info on what you need. A touring bike has eyelets for attaching front and rear racks, fenders, etc. For $750, you could opt for a used bike so check CL and eBay. Good luck!
