Training & Nutrition - Butter vs margarine

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Reread my post - this silly discussion is representative of what's "wrong" with most advertising claims surrounding any particular food stuff or nutrient. Silly, Anthony, your argument is silly, juvenile and only works with respect to non real-world contexts.
Hey guns don't kill people - people kill people - there you go -- there's your argument.......
As I previously posted - the relative benefit or detriment on any type or source of any nutrient has to measured in the context of one's entire diet. Furthermore, even this caveat needs to be qualified with respect to the individual's activities, age, sex and genetic disposition.
I'm sure many of you have already post such info, but maybe we need to go back to baby talk.

Balance...its all about balance...too much of any one kind of nutrient is not good for you just as too little is not good for you. Too much exercise can be bad for you and sitting on the couch doing nothing is bad for you.

Umm, read the article I linked to, http://www.thincs.org/Malcolm.choltheory.htm
Its NOT a silly, juvenile or non real world example. Its just simple, real world chemistry. Thats the point. How it can be ignored in favour of flakier methods such as statistical correlation IS the problem.

I understand the chemistry - it's just that you have taken childish perspective toward all the dynamics associated with nutrition and fixated on several particular processes and mistakenly lost your sense of perspective.
I feel a more thoughtful - yet absolutely silly dogma - would be to go around telling people that getting fat on CHO is just as bad or worse than getting fat on meat and grease........ so what? All poorly balanced diets are suspect...... big deal..... silly stupid thread......
So what's your big message -- "skinny people don't need low-fat diets.?" OK - hey skinny people, maybe it doesn't matter as much if you eat bacon and eggs. Fat people- not a good idea.......

The thinner the margarine, the less oil that was used and therefore the better it is for you.

eating cholesterol does not raise the levels of cholesterol in your blood.
eating fat does not cause you to get fatter.
your body can turn ANY food into fat.
sugars are the easiest thing to store as fat
it is VERY IMPORTANT to eat high-quality fat for proper metabolic functioning of your organs (like your brain, especially)
hydrogenated vegetable oil is undigestable, similar to plastic
there are VAST differences between butter and margarine, its like comparing flax seed oil to motor oil...
do a search for Omega 3, 6 and 9
do a search for medium-chain triglyicerides
dont believe the hype

I use Organic Earth Balance non-hydrogenated whipped margarine (non-gmo, vegan). I rarely use it and it does contain canola... I will probably just buy real butter next time

not an expert but I am an RN and interested in nutrion and read a lot about nutrition for fun.
Take your omega-threes a high quality fish oil...use a pat of butter occasionally is my strategy. Eat avacodos, walnuts all the good fats and the saturated tends to be regulated. Everybody should probably be tracking their HDL/LDL ratio--have your baseline and check it yearly in hopes to optimize it through diet. I know quite a few people who have flipped their ratio for the better by adding 1-2 GM of fish oil per day. Of course trans fats are one of the worst things....caution about labels proclaiming "0 Gms trans fats" because the sneaky *******s can put in 999 mg of trans fats and still claim that. (1000mg = 1 GM)
Substitute olive oil where possible. Dipping your bread in some high quality cold press extra virgin olive oil really helps make the break from too much butter.
Anyway, just my opinion.
You might want to check the new science about phytosterols and how they help with cholesterol....
