I'm taking Amtrak from Chicago to San Francisco this winter and spending a few days in SF before I continue up north. I'll be around Dec. 30th until Jan. 3rd. Would it be worth renting a bike for a day or two? Any rides or sweet places I should check out?

We've got a place to stay, but no other plans, so we're open to everything.

Thanks!

Depending on what you want to ride, your options may be pretty limited. If you can get your bikes on Amtrak, by all means do so. January may be wet, but it'll seem tropical after Dec. in Chicago. Tons of places to ride and lots of bike culture. Casual riding is nice through Golden Gate Park, but the whole city's a great bike destination. The ride to the Marin Headlands over the Golden Gate Bridge will be remembered for a long, long time.

Can't believe nobody responded to this thread prior to this. For more specific destinations, check archived threads. There's been a lot said about this.

Cheers.

do it. i'd just rent a bike for a few days... golden gate park, presidio, marin, berkely, sausalito... all great destinations. i dunno if i'd want to do fixed there coming from chicago though, it's a whole different kind of terrain.
