Can anyone recommend a good source -- book, article, whatever -- with some off-season training suggestions or plans for bettering my track speed?

I'm a relative novice on the oval. I like track racing more than any other racing I've done so far, and want to keep some amount of focus on it through the winter. I'm not sure that I'm yet at the point where a coach would be the best use of my money. But, I want to do more over the next few months than aimlessly ride my bike in a circle until I run out of breath. Thanks.

what do you want to do?
endurance: look in road.
sprint: bulk up and get some base miles.

I'd suggest the book 'Track Sprinting for Dummies' by Mezza.

"Aimlessly ride your bike in a circle until you run out of breath".

There, that'll be $24.94 thankyou.

Thats great they are moving forward. The timeline seems a bit ambitious but as long as it gets done its a good thing. I would not worry about sprint training yet. Just hit the gym and do trainer INTs so you can turn big gears, then do rollers so you can develop good leg speed. You will want to be comfortable spinning 140-150rpm for half a lap or so.
