Winter Cycling - Post your winter bike pics.

Like the thread title says. Just curious what everyone is riding, maybe throw in location/temp/conditions/etc.

Specs: 1983? Schwinn World, purchased for 3 dollars sans wheels. Old Suzue front hub and Araya rim, 27 1/4" tire (generic). Surly fixed/fixed rear laced to Alex double walled 700c rim with DT spokes and 38c cross tire. BB made out of spare spindle (replaced the cottered cranks) and random bearings. The Brooks gets swapped out for an old plastic road saddle in the winter (suprisingly comfortable). Old MKS pedals and plastic clips and nylon straps. Can't remember fender make/model. The fork pictured has been replaced after breaking the fork end. Run 42x17, which allows me to trudge up the hills of Duluth, MN in the winter. Rode it down to -20F last winter and through a couple blizzards, only had to walk it a couple times.

Last winter. Normally I don't use fenders but last winter was one of Denver's rare nasty ones.

I rode a rigid mountain bike when I lived in true snow country in the late 80's and 90's just a few hours drive east of the OP. (UP of Michigan)

In the Pac NW I don't see too much snow on the roads, but it sometimes happens. Got some Nokians for the 'cross bike for this winter for the few days of icy, frozen roads if we get them.

We use them here in Minnesota too! I sew a fleece flap on the inside where the cables pass through to plug that hole and a small pocket for a chem hand warmer if needed... What was the event?

Despite it's looks, Besik worked very well. 2.125 rims like on cruisers. 2.25 mud tires with 1/2 inch sheetmetal screws as studs. Good float, coulda been better though. Also it was a fixXxed gear and a blast to ride, best braking modulation ever. Front brake was more of a speed controller then a brake.

Just a group of insane locals who ride in the cold, then drink beer and tell lies around a custom made burn barrel which has bicycle cut-outs for airflow. Fun is had by all

I'm not really hardcore, I'm pretty wimpy compared to the guys, but being a girl, I can get away with it.

I don't know if there are any made specifically for drop bars. There are pogies used for snowmachines (mobiles) and 4-wheelers or kayaking, which are bigger than what I have. Or you could always have some custom made. Good luck!

We don't need fenders, everything is frozen so no wet spray. I haven't noticed any issues with snow being thrown up on my back. It either doesn't happen or I don't notice.

when it's sloppy, or spitting snow, or what have you, I use my Stumpjumper with fenders. Haven't got any pics of that yet.

Just dress properly. It does take experimenting to see what works for you. Ice.. studded tires=easy.

Tube? You mean change one? It's a pain, but snow does not cause many flats.

Well...I'm Alaskan born and raised...more used to cold than heat. Plus, you only feel the cold for a few seconds, then numbness takes over and all is good :roflmao:

It also became my first electric bike, as such allowed me to keep summer commute times throughout winter, or until the controller crapped out anyways. A blast to ride but much too heavy (>40Kg).

JeanCoutu, are those reflective strips a part of the bike or where are they from? I have really poor side visibility on my winter bike, having something like that would be great.

DOT-C2 Reflective tape as seen on trucks, etc. From Canadian Tire.
There's some in the rims too but they get covered in snow & grime...

Bridge to Terabithia?

Wow so much snow already! Haven't seen a single flurry here in Massachusetts.

here's mine (the all-aluminum marin (san anselmo 2000)). i changed the headset/stem/handlebar and installed nokian w106 (700c) tires, fenders and home-made mud flaps and added "christmas tree" decorations... this bike (and the tires) will soon start their 4th year of service... forecast is for 15-30cm of snow tonight!!!

the other one was my first winter-beater. way too heavy and way too small for me... it was thrown away (along with the innova tires, after ~2 years of service...).

Did some riding around Riverside State park yesterday. For my winter riding I just lower the tire pressure and loosen up the pedal tension some. The pics are in the old camp Seven Mile area of the park.

1997 Schwinn Mesa - Was my 14th birthday gift from my grandparents. Ten years later and I have finally started to take care of it and ride it like I should. This will be its first time seeing snow. Oh boy!

Just this month I have converted it to 2x2, new bars, rigid fork, fenders, BB, crankset, framesaver, everything painted, lubed and sealed. Gonna see how it does in the white stuff before getting some studs.

the Stumpjumper. took it out for a couple hours yesterday, first time I've been on a bike in weeks since I've been sick. felt good to be out there.

The Kuwie is my severe weather bike and besides being a fioxed gear runs a studded front tire whole the Trek is
ideal for those days after the roads have been cleared... the Schwalbe CX Compe tires on the Trek are working
beautifully and one would almost think they were studded as the traction and handling are excellent.

A picture in the snow. Most of the snow has melted today, it is supposed to stay warm all week. Hopefully after that we will get some deep stuff. No pictures of me on the bike, as I have nobody to ride with, snow or not. :(
