Nylon running pants over lycra base?

So far, my cold weather riding gear has consisted of bib shorts, leg warmers, and a windbreaker jacket. I've now reached the point where I need something more for my legs. If I can, I'd prefer to not spend money on tights, but get something that could be more versatile and used for winter hiking and showshoeing too.

So I was considering the common nylon athletic pants you can find inexpensively as a windproof layer to wear over my shorts + leg warmers. Is there anyone else using this combo that can comment on how well it works?

I do the same. I wear bibs, underarmour cold gear tights, then adidas running pants. The running pants are a double layer. I believe nylon outside and nylon mesh inside. They weren't cheap though. I've had them maybe 5 years or so and I think they were about 30-40 dollars. They are tapered too, but I still use reflective strips to tie them down. This is my first year commuting, and I am planning on using another polyester layer when it gets real cold.

I use pertex cycling over-pants in biting cold winds as well as cold rain. The material is a weave of very fine nylon used in a lot of outdoor equipment.

What you describe can work but is not as effective as just an inexpensive winter overtight. These work really well and are less expensive than a one piece winter tight and the two layer upper makes them warmer since you wear them over your shorts.

The nylon lined running pants can work if they are not lined with cotton which many of them are. The good running pants will cost you as much as an inexpensive but good quality cycling tight. With a nylon shell you only need a really thin layer on your lower legs underneath. Any stretchy thin synthetic long underwear or tights will do.
