Hey everybody, this is my favorite spot on the BF! Everyone is very inspirational; I love the "outside the box" ideas, opinions and feed back on all topics.
I've started this thread hoping to collect some web addresses, forums, book titles, movie titles, newsletters or any other resources pertaining to Simple, Sustainable or Green Living. Any additions are much appreciated! Here are just a few of my favorites:
Walden by Henry David Thoreau
It's Easy Being Green: A Handbook for Earth-Friendly Living by Crissy Trask
Gandhi Directed by Richard Attenborough

Sweet!
BTW I already own 3 Conexes (shipping containers) One serves as my shop, the other two are used for....Storage!:p:roflmao: 2 were given to me for the hauling off, the other I think we paid $750 for it. The going price right now where I live is about $1500 or so.
Another thing that makes an awesome small home is a gently used Airstream Trailer. Quite often the older longer ones can be had very reasonably (at least in the US) I don't recommend trying to use them in a very cold climate, but other than that they work great as a small compact house.

Yeah, good score!
This is a site I like for urban gardening. I am setting up my backyard garden using this method. Makes sense for gardening in the city.

I like to check out Grist http://grist.org/ It has good coverage of green issues and I also like to read some of the comments that get attached to the articles.

my fav is the MDU from lot-ek
The various editions of the Whole Earth Catalog (http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=102396) were possibly the all-time greatest resource for the kind of stuff you're interested in-- from shelter to farming to ecology to wilderness survival and hundreds of other topics. Although outdated as a reference source, the philosophy and style of the Catalog will be valuable for years to come.
Walden by Henry David Thoreau
!
This book started me on the quest when I was 14 years old. I'm currently rereading it for the umpteenth time.
I bet you'd love Ken Kifer's annotated online Walden (http://www.kenkifer.com/Thoreau/index.htm).
Ken was a great cyclist and a great writer about cycling, simple living, and many other topics. He was killed by a drunk driver while riding his bike. His website (http://www.kenkifer.com/) has given me many hours of pleasure.
Most of the luxuries, and many of the so-called comforts of life, are not only not indispensable, but positive hindrances to the elevation of mankind. With respect to luxuries and comforts, the wisest have ever lived a more simple and meagre life than the poor.

I'll recommend the More With Less Cookbook or Living More With Less, both by Doris Janzen Longacre. She's a Christian writer and discusses some of the religious reasons for simple living. But these books are best for their practical tips and suggestions. Both were written in the 1970s.

as much as i want to remain car free after i graduate college, i might switch over to being house free ^^^ and look for a stealthy, mobile living space for a few years as i work seasonal outdoor jobs.

Permaculture! I bet quite a few in this forum would find it interesting if you haven't checked it out. This is the textbook for the permaculture movement.
