Hi all.

I tried to remove the brake bosses from my frame with no success. I have tried the following.

Adjustable spanner
LBS with LARGE adjustable spanner
Pliers with huge force.
Pliers and hairdrier to heat up the boss.

So far nothing. Am i doing something wrong? Are these normal clockwise to tight bolts? Its a 2003 rockhopper frame.

are they bolted on or welded? and why are you removing them?

they look bolted. OH i mean the break studs not the actual welded boss thing.

Obviously i want to remove this black stud...to no avail so far :(.

Try an adjustable wrench or a pair of locking pliers.

Thats where the v-brake goes on right? Why would you want to remove that?

danka and a2 , i dont quit follow you here...what are these tools?
Troie, i just dont like it. I got discs now so.... plus i got a couple of Xlite bolts to put there that costed me 15$.

you could always get a hack saw, cut it off flush with the welded on part, and then drill out the part that is still threaded in. although if your not real careful with the drill you may not thread anything else in there ever again...

Math, Vicegrip provides better grip. Also try a socket wrench that's what I used on my old hardtail when I switched it to discs.

Russel, very bad idea, can you say voided warranty.

That stud is not removeable!!!! You bike has one piece 'braze-ons' for brake caliper mounting. If yours were removeable you'd be able to fit a hex head socket over it or use a box end wrench.

Taking a second look at that I may be wrong. Can you take a pic of the other side for me or a picture of it from the back? Sometimes the paint gets down around the threads and acts like 'loctite'.

it was a hex head but i stripped it

I was quite unable to get those off my stumpy, so I put caps on them and forgot they were there.

1. vicegrips as noted above. Crank 'em down real good.
2. Cut it off with a cutting wheel/disk...a hacksaw may not work to well...then use an 'easy out'..
