My wife has been wanting to move to the Raleigh NC area to be closer to family, I am quite happy here in east tn but I told her I would consider this.
What can I expect in the way of biking in the area? I'm sure there is plenty of road riding ( lots of roads right ? ) what is there in the way of trails / mtb riding? I just bought a new Felt Q720 and am thinking of taking it for a weekend visit next time wife goes to check out things.

www.trianglemtb.com for the local MTB trails. Plenty of good ones. Typically you go to the one that's close to your part of town and each area has two close to it. You're also still close enough to the mountains to take trips up there.

www.ncbikeblub.org, www.raleighgyros.com, www.trianglecycling are the road websites around here. Great road scene. Typically you want to ride on the outer parts of town. Area can be flat to slightly hilly. Lots of race teams around as well.

All together it's a great area for cycling in general. Plenty of places to go, lots of people to ride with of all paces and abilities. There's a lot of charity rides and centuries in Raleigh and across the state. There are also some good LBSs.

Chiming in a little late here...

Raleigh / Cary / Chapel Hill are, I would say, very bike friendly. As mentioned before, there are many good places for mountain and road biking, and lots of people biking them. Also, there are quite a few good local bike shops in the area.

Something not mentioned before, people occasionally organize alleycat races, usually in downtown Raleigh. So there's that too.
