We might actually meet at the desk then. I'll be getting there with the wife about 3:00 as well. :DTom,

Check your PM's, just sent my cell # back to you.

I should be arriving Friday, right around check-in time. Feel free to contact me anytime, if you need a hand with anything, or for just getting together.

I'll give you a ring to let you know I arrived once I get myself settled in.

I was going to go with a new set of 700 x 23's, but decided against it and will ride my 25's.
2 Bottles (1 with water / 1 with Hammer Perpetuem, and I'll carry a few packets in my jersey).
Plan to carry Hammer Gels also, but the Perpetuem may suffice (one Perp packet mixed with water provides a whopping 260 calories).
Seatbag with all the good things, and a Topeak Roadmorph pump on my top tube.
Training: Too little, but I'm still going to see how far, and how much fun I can have. :D
Ride Plan:
6 segments
7 laps / rest and refill 5 minutes
7 laps / rest and refill 5 mins
7 laps / rest and refill 10 mins
7 laps / rest and refill 5 mins
7 laps / rest and refill 10 mins
5 laps / finish
With this plan I'll have to maintain roughly a 17 mph average :bang: (I should have trained more, ha ha)

That was fun. I rode the 50k and it was really nice country side and the parts that were in the city were well marked and traffic was not a problem. I do have one question. Did anyone else ride the 50k? I checked with three or 4 others at the first sag stop and my mileage was exactly correct. I got back to the track I had ridden exactly 40 miles. 50 k is like 31 miles aint it? Did anyone else notice this?

That was a fun ride. I came a little late to the track, somewhere around 7am and therefore missed the photoshoot with the team.
But I did pedal 101 miles in 5h07m. My fastest century ever, I was shooting for under 5hours, but it didn't work out. Tom was not kidding when he announced fastest century you will ever ride. I almost fainted when I got to the lunch table from the exhaustion.

In the first few laps after the riders were allowed to start the ride I was riding on my own, passing up a few Team Stormcrowe riders but then I saw a paceline ahead of me and I latched on. I was traveling at 20.2mph avg speed at that point and was right on target for a sub 5 hour ride. The paceline was going good for a while, I took a few pulls as well, until most of them pulled of at around 30 miles for their first rest stop. Bummer! I continued riding on my own until I found another paceline and latched on again. This was a fairly large paceline of about 15 riders and again I took a few pulls in that paceline as well until the last pull when I was trying wave the next rider through but to my surprise nobody was behind me anymore. Rats! Paceline gone again.
So at mile 55 I ran out of water in my two water bottles and decided it was time to pull in for my first rest stop. At that point my avg was 20.3mph, still on target.
I filled up my bottles, wolfed a banana down, adjusted my shoes a little and gulped down another bottle of water and off I went again.
As I was going my merry way someone closed in on me (forgot his name, met too many people) and asked if it's ok to trade pulls. I agreed, even so two riders sharing pulls is going to be work, lots of it.
So about every half lap we swapped pulls and my avg stayed at 20.2mph. Around mile 70 I told him I can't trade pulls anymore, I was getting too tired and I needed to take a slower pace. We chatted a little on the way around the track and him and me pulled off for another reststop at mile 75. I got some water and Powerade and back on the track I was once again soloing around the track. Now I could really start feeling my butt and my legs. I pushed on, sub 5h century on my mind.
At mile 90 it become torture, I slowed down to 17-18mph and my avg started dropping to 20.0mph. Noooooooo.
At mile 101 I had a 5h07min riding time with an avg. of 19.8mph. Sooo close. I guess I need more training.

So I staggered to the lunch table in my near delirious state and met Beverly and Denny from the Team at the table. Later on more people from the Team joined and we exchanged stories of riding and Formula 1 :D

Tom, next year I'd enjoy to be on your Team again :) And that time I'm trying not to come so late so I can get some more pre-ride chats in.

While I wasn't officially on Team Stormcrowe (but I will most certainly be next year!) I did meet Tom before the event started. I brought 2 friends with and we opted for the 75K road ride, and it was fantastic! I achieved several firsts:

1). First collision with another bike. We crossed a hard rail crossing and my hapless victim dropped his water bottle. He immediately panic stopped sideways just past the crossing and sent the group of 10 or so of us who where 2-3 lengths behind him scattering.. Unfortunately, I ran out of space and just nailed him and his bike. We were all fine, however I'm impressed my bike was able to seriously damage 7 of his spokes with no damage and I rolled on.. He was SAG'ed out, since his wheel resembled a dented taco. I felt bad about it, but think it's fair punishment for panic stopping w/o looking over your shoulder only to retrieve a water bottle...

2). 53.2 miles riden, longest distance ever

3). top speed 38.7 mph., if I had known the hill was coming, I'm SURE I could have pulled another 4-5 mph

4). full bibs and riding jersey with no discomfort, no chafing, and no moobie mauling. I felt great!

5). complete Zen moment. We were decending through some tree covered, heavy forest area with the sun poking through in brilliant shafts of light, a marvelous Bocelli piece came up on my MP3 player, I just pedaled hard through it and was at complete peace with the world. I still get goose bumps thinking about it. I haven't had that kind of simple, complete joy and peace on a bike since the first time I actually got away and rode on my own without training wheels for the first time. Just WOW..

After I finished I happened to run into Tom again in the lunch line and shared a wonderful few minutes with him going over some finer points of biking and life. I could see his spirit was raring to complete all 100, but the flesh failed him, and I'm glad he got off track when he did. He was in pain, but ready to keep healing and keep riding.

All in all, it was an amazing experience and I can't wait to do it next year, with the proper jersey!

John

Hey all, I'm home. John, it was great to meet you, as well as everyone else on the team! Absolutely outstanding ride. I made 41.2 miles out of the century, but I was riding with a bum shoulder. My legs had the oomph, but the shoulder just hurt too much! I'll be posting a complete ride report, complete with pics and some prefinal edit video.

I'll definitely be putting Team Stormcrowe together again next year, and we just missed $4000.00 for the team donations. GREAT JOB, EVERYONE!:beer:
