So I recently built up my bike and everything was running nice and quiet but now there seems to be a noise that I cannot find. My chain line is as straight so I don't think it could be that (although it does sound like it). It sounds like it is coming from the front of the bike, it is a slight rattling. The only thing I can think of is that I didn't grease the fork when I put it on so could that be it? (Although it started out making no noise at all. This is really bugging me, anyone have any ideas as to what it could be?

rattling? front of bike? check your valve ring/thing i don't know what it is called, but that little ring that you screw down around the valve. if it is loose the valve may rattle against the rim. you probably know this, but your chain is still going to make some noise even with a perfect chainline. i've never actually seen (heard) a bike that is completely silent (although they may be out there). flip your bike over and spin the cranks (don't cut off your finger). if the noise is gone then you can rule the drive train/rear wheel out.

Those little valve thingies get me all the time, the other night I thought something was seriously wrong with my front wheel and sure enough it was that damn little nut thing

speaking from experience, make sure you check everything, including things you are sure it couldnt be.

I just spent 3 days taking my drive train apart probably 7 times and regreasing/redoing EVERYTHING to find that it was my chainring bolts. they were tight, but still clicking. 3 days of agonizing creaking and maintenance and it was my stupid chainring which I was SURE was on fine.

last week there was a great disturbance and rattling on my bike, similar to a million spokes all pulling out at once...but, after checking the front and rear spoke, chaing ring, crank nut things, and headset it turne out to be just the screws to where i could attack a water bottle cage on the down tube were loose.
