Some Englishman back in the 1800s got the idea that he could save himself a lot of trouble, and have just as much fun, by skipping certain elements of traveling around the world, seeing exotic lands by ship.

Instead, he set up a little ship of his own. It included a very comfortable chair, surrounded by some good pictures of the lands he was visiting at the moment, some of the local food and smells, etc. And some good well-written books.

The Internet has upped the ante. So have certain magazines and books.

Some of these virtual tours can be excellent. There was one in Adventure Cyclist that was particularly good. In fact, there have been several.

One drawback to virtual touring is the absence of the combination of vigorous exercise and being outdoors under the open sky, the stars and the sun and nature, and all the rest that goes with it.

What if exercise were included, though? --maybe including a good, vigorous jaunt (on a bike perhaps) in the middle of a read?, or reading while on a stationary bike, which could be outside?

I wonder how far this can be taken.

It seems to me that either one, taken to its furthest limits (if there are limits), can be wonderful. And it seems they can be mixed and cocktailed.

I wonder what all is involved here, what enhances either type of touring, and what else contributes to pushing the limits of a really good tour.

I tell you what you pay me to go cycle touring. I'll ride the bike and report back what it is like. I'll take loads of pics and even photoshop you in as well as sending you souvenirs I buy en route....:p

I couldn't do a virtual tour instead of a real tour. I have trouble watching travel shows on TV or reading about other people's travels in a magazine .... every time I do, I desperately want to be there myself. The only travel books I've ever been able to read are those by Bill Bryson.

The thing is ... I want to see everything for myself, I want to touch the brick or stone the buildings are made of, I want to smell the smokey smell of the small villages, I want to talk to a whole variety of people along the way, I want to eat the fresh croissants from the patisseries, I want to hear the cooing of the doves. There is just so much a virtual tour couldn't give me. They never show me what's on the other side of the building or hill, or what's up that lane, or what's around the corner. And I want to know!

As for this: "What if exercise were included, though? --maybe including a good, vigorous jaunt (on a bike perhaps) in the middle of a read?, or reading while on a stationary bike, which could be outside?" ......... I do something like that every day. I read and I ride. But I bore easily ... I get tired of the same old roads all the time. I think I've ridden every paved road in about a 50-100 km radius of where I live. Any chance I get, I'll ride elsewhere!!

Or... you could download an audio book of a cycling tour into your ipod and listen to it as you ride around the neighborhood. The Road That Has No End (http://www.downtheroad.org/Publishing/) is one option. Does anyone know of any other cycle touring audio books?
