I have a crappy swinn mt bike and my back wheel i screwed up so i need a new one. But i want wheels with front disc brake comptaibility and on those sets the rear wheel is for a 8 or 9 speed cassette. My old cassette was only 6 i think or at leats less then 8. Could i still use a 8 or 9 speed cassette(i know i won't be able to use gears not supported my shifters) and be ok it would just use the first 6 gears?

The spacing is different between a 8-9 speed cassette and a 6 speed cassette. Also does you're frame and fork support disc brakes? I believe you could get some spacers so you could mount a 6 speed casette on a 8-9 speed hub.

As Kev says you have a spacing problem, the new rear wheel will be wider
than the old and hard to put in. Disc brakes require welded on bosses for the brake caliper to mount on, these are could be added by a frame builder but the frame would need repainting: not worth it. There is an aftermarket device
that bolts to the seat stay from which the caliper can be hung but the reference escapes me - probably on this forum somewhere last month. There is no equivalent for the front wheel. If the bike is steel it is spreadable and weldable, if Al no. Better bet is to take the wheel and rebuild it with the old hub assuming the hub is ok. Steve
