Road Cycling - Took the plunge: I'll be an Orbea owner!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

First, thanks to those steel specialists that pointed me in so many great directions in another thread. I ended up ordering an Orbea Ultrafoco Carbon in Euskaltel team colors last week. I'm building her up myself to include Record shifters, derailleurs and brakes, FSA Pro Team Carbon cranks, FSA cro-moly spindled BB, Record hubs with Open Pro rims, and a new Thompson seatpost that I may or may not use (this depends on the one I have now being long enough for the slightly sloping geometry on the frame). I'm moving my saddle (Aliante), stem and bars (Ritchey WCS and Pro, respectively) over to the new bike, along with the pedals (Look 296's.). That's the spec sheet. It's going to be an incredible ride, and I'm pumped. I've been feeling bad for the ol' 'Dale, which will probably be for sale in the next couple of weeks. When you spend as much time with something wedged between your legs as I have the 'Dale, you can't help but feel sentimental when it's time for it to go. I'm sure that the new ride will take care of any silly sentimentality pretty soon, though. Triple butted Columbus Ultrafoco steel tubing with Columbus carbon rear seatstays should ride like a dream.

I got a great deal on the whole kit from a shop in Norman, Oklahoma called Buchanan Bicycles. Tobin knows his stuff and has a sweet merlin with Record and Chorus bits on it that's usually his ride to work. Stop in and see what's up if you get a chance.

I know, TTIWWOP, but I don't have it yet so I can't take pics yet. It's being shipped to Oklahoma and then on to me, and then I've got to build her up, so it'll be next week. The waiting's not bad; I've still got a few hours to spend with the 'Dale.

Had to tell someone other than the wife, who's still in shock that she let me get this bike.

Cool beans! I just saw a Orbea in the Euskatel team colors on the Silver Comet Trail this past weekend. I didn't get a chance to chase him down to get a better look, but it was unmistakable in its appearance.

Congrats on the new bike. And yes, we all want pictures.

Welcome to the Orbea Owners Club :) OK mine is not nearly as nice as yours (I wish I had Euskatel colors), but they're all good!

Jonny, what frame are you on?

Most of the guys that work at the shop I'm getting the bike from are on Orbea roadie bikes, too. They started me even looking at the brand. I think the frame should be about the best riding bike I can afford, especially with the parts hanging off of it.

I didn't like the idea of having team paint on a bike again, as I've had a CAAD3 Cannondale done up with the colors of the '98 Saeco squad since, well, 1998. But I don't feel like a poseur, I know I'm a poseur, so it's all good. (That, and they weren't going to have the frameset I wanted in my size until at least October, which was just too long to wait.)

I like the idea of an international OOC (Orbea Owners Club).

:p Spoken like a true NASIOC member!! I'm one too, although don't surf the boards as much as I used to. It's a lot cheaper to mod your bike that it is to mod your Impreza...at least was the case for me.

Congrats on the purchase. How much time do you plan to spend building her up? Let us know how it rides and...

TTIWWOP!!
