Southern California - Tour de Red Rock PIX and REPORT

I named this ride Tour de Red Rock since it encompasses Red Rock Canyon and Spring Mountain Ranch which is full of terrific scenery. I sent the notice out on Monday for a fabulous ride with alot of climbing and beautiful terrain. I even started the ride later = 9am since I like to sleep in and the temps would be a little warmer. I received email after email of folks RSVP'ing but figured half would change their minds cause that's just human nature. NOPE, they all showed:

Mixed in this group of friends you may notice those UNATTACHED KITS, yep we have no shame, we bought them. And boyyyyyyyyy did we get alot of questions. The non-cyclists thought it was an advertisement for dating........and of course the roadies knew: we were a group without sponsors, teamless and on the prowl. Eventhough neither answer was correct......it made for alot of laughs. Everytime Cyn or lara would do something outrageous or stupid, I would be sure to tell them that's why they are both unattached :)

THE RIDE WAS 65 MILES WITH 5900 FT OF ELEVATION. WE CRUISED THROUGH RED ROCK CANYON, THEN ENJOYED THE 13 MILE SCORCHER THRU THE SCENIC LOOP.

Thanks for the pics Asia & cyn. I've done that Red Rock loop several times. There was a fire across the the entrance last time I was there. The road was closed so I didn't get to do the loop. Looking forward to it Thanksgiving weekend.

Did that Sunday while up there. Makes a nice loop.

Those of you who have read this and other similar threads from Vegas know that Asia pulls together some spectacular rides! This was another fantastic Saturday spent on the bike. I don't know how she does it, but she gets people to come out of the woodwork for these rides. Maybe it's the SAG vehicle stuffed to the gills with Nutter Butters, cans of cold Coke, fruit, granola bars, and Gatorade in every conceiveable flavor! Nah - it's the fact that we are just a foolish bunch of riders who know how to have a good time doing something we love.

As many times as I've ridden through the Red Rock area, I never get tired of it. Having a big group like this to share the ride with made it even better. It was great to see so many familiar faces and lots of new ones, too. Maybe if we all bug her enough we can get Asia to put a Thanksgiving weekend ride together (hint hint) . . . Boja, are you out there in BF land? Can you drive SAG for us again? Pretty please with sugar on top . . . you rock as our SAG driver extraordinaire!

After rolling through Red Rock and past the town of Blue Diamond, the group headed towards Mt. Potosi. Most of the group took off and cruised up to the summit (brrrrrr - I heard it was c-c-cold up there!), but some of us took at more "relaxed" approach.

The only route I've fround so far is from the resort, west on Charleston (hwy 159) then right on the RR Scenic route...

Any tips or suggestions?

I rode with the Las Vegas Valley Bicycle Club (http://vegasbikeclub.org/) on Saturday and then I rode by myself on Sunday. I did two laps of the Red Rock scenic loop. They have water at the visitor center. I really enjoyed riding out there.

Try calling the bike shop McGhie's 702 252-8077. 4035 S. Fort Apache Road, LV

On the other side of West Charleston Blvd near the Red Rock Resort, but further east, will be a shopping center with a Starbuck's. That's where a lot of the riders meet for their morning rides over the weekend.

Hey Jag, I got your email. You will be fine with 2 water bottles. The ride up to the scenic loop is only 6 miles and the loop itself is only 13 miles. Generally speaking most riders continue west on Charleston down to either Blue Diamond Rd ( rt 160 ) where there is a store and gas station or they turn off and go to the McGhies Outpost and there is a small store there. On Wednesday the las vegas cycling club has a ride that goes in the area minus the loop. They start at that Starbucks on Charleston and Hualapai right across from the Hotel. If you are riding after 3pm yours truly is available :twitchy::p

Thanks nygirl, sorry, I just saw this post, we just got back tonight...

We had a blast, we rode Monday and Tuesday Mornings from the red rock resort up around the loop and back, it was a great ride...

We rolled out from the Hotel at 6 am, the weather was kind to us, it only got kinda hot after we descended back to 159 which as you know, took us back to the resort, the first day we all ran out of water, I guess we didn't conserve enough, but the next Day we were fine once we knew what to expect...

We will probably be back next month hopefully...

I took a ton of pics so I'll post some when I get a chance...
