View Full Version : Recommend me some rims & tires!

Well my Fall project seems to be slowly turning into a winter project. I'm rebuilding an older road bike and I'm looking to get some new wheels built to better suit my 230lbs. I'll be rebuilding the Shimano 600 hubs with new bearings.

Anyways, I am looking to keep the classic 700c road rim look (lower profile) with a stronger modern rim...while not spending too much. (I'd like to keep it under $100 for the pair, the lower the better.)

As far as tires go, the bike originally came with 23's but I have the feeling I am going to need to go bigger. Would a 28 in the rear and 25 up front be more suitable? I'd like to keep gumwalls on it. Thanks in advance!

Mavic Open Pro are very good rims. Open Sport are okay and cheaper. For tires I really like Conti - either Ultra Gator Skin (good weather) or Grand Prix 4 Season (bad weather).

I prefer 28s, which in reality are reallt 26s. Just make sure you have clearance for them.

I like Velocity Deep V's and for tires, I like Continental, or Soma Everwears.

I think the profile of the Deep V or Mavic CXP line will be too high for the OP, although they are damn tough rims.

Those are a little deeper than I'd like to go. I hadn't thought too much about clearance, if I'm limited to say, 700x25C, is that going to be cutting it close?

I recommend MA3 rims and specialized armadillo 28's, have been running them for 2 years and they have kept true very well. 202 lbs here. I've used this combination on several old road bikes built for 27" wheels, and they clear fine

The MA3 has been replaced by the Open Sport.

Yes. Exactly what frame and fork do you have?

It's an '81 Miyata 912. The narrowest spot between the chainstays where the tire travels is about 33-34mm.
